Damn 305's..
Damn 305's..
I have a 1983 305 with carb, and i have had a bad tranny for a while now but.. the tranny grinded when in PRN, but was fine in D321 so i took the torque convertor bolts out so the engine would run without the tranny being hooked up and grinding, well i needed my battery charger, let it sit on 10amp for 4 hrs, came back started right up, kinda shook the car.. but it died and the starter clicked, well i left it sit for 3hrs came back and it started, i tried to kepp it reved up quite high so it wouldnt die.. well 40 secs of reving i decided to let her slow down.. well the first second i started to slower rev it locked up.. it wont turn over and the starter clicks... i have it on the charger again... any hints? oh and before the tranny went, it ran like Brand new, it even spun tires.. but after 2 days of just putting it **** the bed..
Re: Damn 305's..
Where do I start?
Transmission failure usually will not cause engine damage. The only way it could is if the torque converter ballooned out and damaged the engines thrust bearing. But you claimed you were able to unbolt the converter, which probably means the converter is OK.
If the battery does not maintain a charge, and the engine will not run long without a charger on it, you have a charging system problem. Check alternator output.
If the engine ran after the charging, and cut out after only 40 seconds or so, there is nothing wrong with the engine. The car ran off battery charge only, and not the alternators output. And by the way, refrain from using the term "locked up" here. An engine locking up is completely different from an engine shutting down due to lack of voltage.
What trans did you put in it? Where/by who was it rebuilt? And if a TH700-R4 trans, is the TV cable hooked up properly?
IROCs were not made in 1983.
Nice title

Re: Damn 305's..
Oh its locked up!!! i cannot turn it.. i can turn it with a cro-Bar wedging into the trans bellhousing and grabbing the flywheel... it turns quite hard.. the battery just needed a boost so it would crank it over with the fully 13.5 amps. but ever since it locked up i cant get the starter to turn it.. but my cro-bar will...

Check your grounds, then check your starter. Is it the original? Maybe it's coincidence and it finally gave up the ghost.

If the engine is hydrolocked, pulling the plugs will certainly remove the blockage. However, I'm betting on something like a starter problem, or maybe a wrench in the flexplate. 83Iroc, let us know what you find and good luck.
Re: Damn 305's..
yanked the plugs, i am going to wait a day or two, I keep getting soaked plugs, i hope the gas in the cyl's evaporate.. it cranks fine, when it starts it runs like its flooded for 5-6 seconds, you have to hold the throttle to the floor(WOT) for it to start, then after 6-8 seconds it comes to a Screeching hault, and locks up, but i can start it again and it does the same thing again, i gave up, i know somethings not working, right anyway..
