Cutting floorboards to make room for exhaust
Cutting floorboards to make room for exhaust
Since I'm basically building the meanest street machine I can on my budget, I have not been impressed at all by the aftermarket y-pipes and exhaust avaliable for the 3rd gen cars.
Quite frankly, y-pipes suck.
So I had the idea of cutting out the rear floor behind to front seats to make room for some mufflers. No tailpipes, just dump the exhaust before the rear axle. I have the resources to do it, and I think this is undoubtedly the cheapest and best way to have a nice sounding/flowing exhaust. Plus, I figure it will give me the ground clearance needed for the right stance.
Anybody done this before? Could I be on to something new and totally awesome?
BTW, I ordered my AFR 195's Monday.

I have seen it before, I think it was on third gen, it was a strip car but the guy cut up the floor for subframes and cut out the back seat area and put in "boxes" so the mufflers could set real close to the floor I`d say go for it I`ve got twin 3inch pipes from the headers to the rear bumper..check it out

I heard of one guy who cut out the dips under the back seats and welded them back in upside-down so that they were humps...this gave him room for a pair of single-in/single-out mufflers mounted sideways under the rear seat. IIRC he had the exhaust dump out the sides in front of the rear wheels.
I rode in a V-8 Vega once that was running a 400 small block and had 2 exhaust tunnels that ran between your feet, about 3" high and he was running straight chambered mufflers and the pipes exited out the side in front of the rear wheels, that was one bad *** ride

Don't get me wrong it will sound good but if its your daily driver you will end up getting CO in the car and possibly do YOU harm. I know this since I used to have a '73 Camaro with Flowmasters and dumps. I used to get so tired on the way to work then when I finally got full exhaust it never happened again! The ride to work was only 20 minutes too!!

This will be about as far from a daily driver as you could get. Simply a toy for nice days. I looked at it today, and I am definately planning on doing this. If I can, I'll take pics so I can help someone out with this later if the need arises.
I'm aware of the exhaust getting trapped under the car, it just seems it depends more on the car body than anything else. Our old 72' Dart dumps before the axle, and I've never smelled gas or noticed any ill effects in it. My uncles 57 Chevy however, was so bad he had to run tailpipes.
The floor itself will not leak, it will be welded and of course seam-sealed with the appropriate 3M® product.

Most or all states have laws againest exhaust exiting under the vehicle, I was pulled over for loud pipes once in my brothers truck that had headers and glasspipes exiting under the cab, cop gave me a ticket and said he would tear it up if I got full exhaust put on it. But it mostly isn't inforced unless you get pulled over for another offence.
