Custom Exhaust Idea...Opinions? (Pic)
Custom Exhaust Idea...Opinions? (Pic)
Well, my next matter of business after I get my car running right after my heads and cam swap (up at college, never get the chance to work on her), is to fix this half assed exhaust that is currently on here. Instead of doing the
same old cliche' 300$ catback system, I wanted to do something of my own for about 60% of the price.
Now, I currently have Summit Shorty Headers, and a Flowtec Y-pipe, and have been pretty happy with those, so I don't really wanna scrap them just yet, because I know half of you right now are going "true duals man". And yes, I have a welder.
MY IDEA
Instead, I was thinking of ditching the cat, getting a summit glasspack muffler to put in place of it (3" in and out), and running a crossover Y afterwards. Then splitting the Y out to either side of the car with 3" straight tubing from summit, and using a summit 3" U bend to fab up the turns, and dumping it right before the tires out of a dual 2.5" slant cut non rolled edge tip. (I'd be using a 3" - 2.5" reducer, because frankly, I think a dual 3" tip would look horrible.)

BLUE = HEADERS
GREEN = Y-PIPE
YELLOW = GLASSPACK
RED = CROSSOVER Y-PIPE
BLACK = CUSTOM EXHAUST w/ TIPS
QUESTIONS
- Would there be an issue with ground clearance going across the car to the drivers side like that? Seems like a straight shot across will be alright, I mean I have seen guys run H-pipes and end up with 3" of clearance to the ground.
- Whats the deal with glasspacks? I know that they give an awesome tone...friend of mine has a set on his chevelle and I love them, but what I mean is, do they flow nicely? Or do you sacrifice having a measly 300cfm for tone? Any glasspacks that flow better than the plain jane summit ones, but in the same general price range? (under 40$..remember the point here is to have full custom for less than the price of a real set.)
- Would you think that the exhaust would look better dumping AFTER the tires? This might also throw the smoke out when doing a burnout, which would look pretty bitchin'.
All in all, I am looking at about 170$ here which includes every peice of exhaust I'd need. Probably 190$ after I get a few decent hangars, or some way to keep it stationary.
So, does this seem impractical? Would it be better to just get a summit X-pipe and fab it up to my shorties? Lets get some feedback here.

it also looks like you might run into problems with the tranny/torque arm. most glasspacks are pretty long, i would say about 1.5x as long as a stock cat
that would put your crossover pipe around the middle of the car, and thats where it will get tough running the pipe to the drivers side w/o interfering w/ the drive shaft or torque arm.

Ive got the headman headers with y pipe. What I want to do is ad an x over then add bullet mufflers dual to dual over axel with dual flat z28 tips going out the middle of the back bumper. What do you think? Will it be to loud considering I dont have a cat convert?

IVe done basicly the same thing except on a dual cat model - makes it somewhat easier.
sounds great, look great, not too expensive - and so far im the only F-body around here with the setup.

that is more or less what you are going to be looking at, it is great and does not have clearance issues so long as your bushings and suspension components are ok, and for god sake why would you do 20mph over a speedbump anyway?

Are any of your parts crossing over the driveshaft?
Re: Custom Exhaust Idea...Opinions? (Pic)
both of my pipes and bullet mufflers are located directly under and to the side of my driveshaft - held in place by steel hangers so there is no chance of scraping the shaft even on massive speedbumps where i do rub ive never come close to the shaft. And let me empasize how great it sounds having true duals - at idle you know something is under the hood, but at WOT you could almost visualize the entire eternal army of hell leaping through the pavement and stampeding down the highway : It's better than any other system IMHO.
Re: Custom Exhaust Idea...Opinions? (Pic)
the entire system by the way including parts/labor/etc. was only $290 at a local shop - now admitidly i wouldnt trust that job to anyone unwilling to try custom work, but most of these guys have had or have a F-body.

If i remember correctly they are simple dynomax or summit bullet type mufflers, and hooker dual chrome tips. Never really knew the PN for them just went based on what the shop could get in to install, but there are numerous options to go with on tips and mufflers...unpacked or glasspacked, dual chrome, or single out rectangle tips - honestly do whatever makes you smile when you take a look at the car.

Wow, i do have to say that is a pretty good looking setup, but if someone like myself were to try that, i think the gfx on my car would melt/discolor
Re: Custom Exhaust Idea...Opinions? (Pic)
Why? It's not different from running exhaust tips out the rear like I have now. I have dual outs that are literally touching my bumper and it is totally fine.
Re: Custom Exhaust Idea...Opinions? (Pic)
AS It should be you just dont want the exhaust itself to breath on the GFX it can cause it to stain and deteriorate with time - as for indirect exposure you should be fine so long as the exhaust is not flaming hot.
