Cost of Ported Heads

Re: Cost of Ported Heads
Why port your stock heads? Why not get a set of AFR 195s and they will flow way better than your stock heads with a mild port. Porting the head is one thing. You might also want to spend more money on upgrades like springs, larger valves, retainers, keepers.

To get them PROPERLY ported by a professional such that they make a significant increase in horsepower will cost you closer to $500 to $700. Add a complete valve job, performance springs, and bigger intake valves and you are soon at NEW cylinder head costs.
My last set of iron heads that I redid (with 25 hours of MY OWN PORTING labor) still cost me $460 in parts and machine work.
It is a better dollar-per-horsepower increase these days just to chose from one of the many aftermarket head packages out there. Want a budget steel head? There's four or five choices out there that'll kick any ported L98 iron head for less than $800 a set. Want aluminum? Spend $1250 and you'll have some serious flowing heads.
This is where you want to spend your performance money as it'll make every other speed part you get work so much better.

Wow.. I had no idea that a port job cost so much. I was gonna say, if you can get your port job on your stock heads nice and cheap, it is deff. worth it. Just make sure you have lifters, rods, rockers, and maybe even a nice cam to go with it. BUT.. since it is so much, I would DEFF. go with AFR.. those are some beastly freaking heads!
