Question Check engine light question....

Alright, so I finally figure out all my backfiring problems and nasty gas fumes by fixing my fuel pressure regulator (which by the way was sooooo bad, it was pushing fuel through the vacuum line into the plenum and an 1/8 inch of gas was floating in the plenum!!!). Now it runs decent. The only problem I'm having is when I start it cold the engine light comes on, but if I drive it for 20-30 seconds and then restart it, the light goes off. What would cause this light to come on for such a small amount of time? Oh, and it will put out one puff of smoke too when it starts, but that's all, then it's done. Is this bad valve guides?

Thanks for any help,
Kyle

the puff of smoke is proably valve seals. why don't you check the codes stored in the computer to find out what is setting the SES light?

First thing you should do is disconnect the battery. This will clear any codes you triggered and put back together.

the battery has been disconnected about once a week for the last month due to me working on it. I've even changed the hypertech chip out and put back in the stock one. The reason I haven't taken a reading of the code is because the light will only be on at certain times(mainly when it's cold) and then goes off. Does the computer store the code even though the light's not on?

thanks for the help,
Kyle

Yes it does Kyle. What you will have to do is get a paper clip, bend it in half and bridge the A & B terminals in the ALDL port. Then you watch the SES light flash. It will flash a code 12 first, 1 followed by 2 flashes. This will occur 3 times. After that it will flash the stored codes in the same manner.

Thanks guys. I've done the paperclip thing before when I was having the fuel problems. I was just wondering if the code was still stored in the computer even though the light wasn't on.

Alright, well, I checked it and it's the great code 32(EGR). So I'm wondering why the egr code would be thrown for only like 30 seconds when the engine is cold. I thought the EGR does most of it's stuff at higher temps?

I think I'm gonna change the vacuum solenoid and see if that helps.

thanks for the help,
Kyle
