Changing steering wheels effect anything?

Ok.. say I were to buy a GT or MOMO steering wheel.. one with smaller cuircumference than stock. WOuld this alter the steering ration any? I am thinking it would make it handle better, as you wouldn't have to turn the wheel as far to make it move as much, but I am unsure if power steering works this way. Any help here? Thanx all,
Matt

I put a smaller diameter Sparco wheel on that you can see in one of the pics in my sig. I think it makes for a better "feel" and have not noticed anything negative.

No, the steering ratio would not change with a smaller wheel. The ratio is measured in turns "lock to lock". A smaller wheel would not change that.

Ok, I was not sure that because of getttnig a smaller wheel, I kinda was figuring that it would take less turns to reach the other lock.

How does the "feel" improve?

The diameter of the wheel will be smaller, so you will have to move your hand a shorter distance, but it will still require exactly the same number of rotations around.

I used to have a MOMO wheel on my old 87 Iroc. It was nice!

Just don't put it on upside down or you will turn right when you want to go left. LOL!

J/K Had a neighbor kid one time and he had this big hammer and was beating on the floor around the gas peddal. So I asked the stupid question, what are you doing? He replied if I can make more space for the peddle to go down the car will go faster. He was serious also.

Will it require more effort to turn the wheel if I get a smaller-diameter wheel? BTW.. how does the steering ratio on Z28's compare to other high-performance cars? Just wondering..

Wow.. that is totaly lame, lol. Was the kid an idiot, or was that just a one-off stupid incident?

My Momo wheel was my first mod. I like it way better than the stocker.

That wheel looks really great on your car! How much did it cost you?

A smaller wheel will require less of a turn in either direction to achieve a similar turning radius, as compared to a larger steering wheel. So, effectively, you have "quickened" your steering ratio.

not true. The new wheel, no matter what its size, will require exactly the same degrees of rotation. A smaller wheel will require a little more force, because the distance of the lever arm is shorter.

You could remove the wheel completely, and clamp a vice-grips on the steering shaft. You would have to rotate the vice-grips around exactly the same amount of turns as you did the steering wheel. The wheel is just a lever arm for you to turn the shaft. no matter what kind of lever you use, the shaft still needs to turn the same amount to achieve the same amount of turn.

If you put your hands on the wheel at 10:00 and 2:00, then make a turn rotaing the wheel to 11:00 and 3:00, your hand positions will not change with a different size steering wheel on the same turn. You would need to change the gear ratio in the steering rack to make a change.

If you have a person on a giant wheel of 40 ft in diameter, and inside this is a person on a smaller interlocking wheel of 20 ft in diameter, and you turn the wheel 90*, the person on the smaller 20 ft wheel will cover less distance to achieve the same 90* turn than the one on the 40 ft wheel.

Case closed.

Re: Changing steering wheels effect anything?

My thinking is that of Sitting Bulls.. That is what I thought about needing to turn the wheel less. What about all you people that changed your wheels to aftermarket? Can you guys tell a difference?

Re: Changing steering wheels effect anything?

i have a grant gt wheel, i have to turn the wheel the same number of DEGREES, but my hands travel a lesser DISTANCE because the wheel itself is smaller

i dont think the smaller wheel makes any significant change in the effort it takes to turn the wheel, but it feels quicker to me
