changing motor mounts

You have got to be kidding me!...I have to remove my front springs just to change the motor mounts? why? I havent gotten up under the front cross member to see but from the top I can see the 3 bolts holding the clamshell on....dont I just remove those bolts and pull the clam off and change out the mount?

what all is involved with changing motor mounts?

Re: changing motor mounts

I have removed them without taking much apart it's just getting the wrench up in to hold the bottom of the bolt is easier with the suspension removed If you have a good impact sometimes you can spin them off or just reverse and snap them off then feed the new bolts through.. It is easier of corse without the engine in the car !!!

Re: changing motor mounts

thing is, yeah, you can see the bolts, but there are nuts inside the crossmember, and the access holes are the spring pockets

i usually cut the old bolts with a torch, then use mechanics wire to fish new bolts in from underneath(bolts coming in from the bottom, nuts on top), then use a air tool(whatever fits, to tighten them down, spin it enough, and there is no need to hold the bolt

Re: changing motor mounts

Like stated above, just cut out the old bolts and use wire or fishing line to pull the new ones thru.

Re: changing motor mounts

you mean when I undo the visible bolts from the top...underneath nuts are going to drop?...and the whole problem is holding the nuts back on the bolts to screw them on?

hold on a min wishmaster, its ALOT easier than you think to do this ESP being the motor is out. if you can get a long extension or make one with a few extensions and a knuckle joint with a lil tape on it you can do this by jacking the car up to let the front suspinsion unload.(with the wheels off focourse)
have uyour buddy in the eng bay and you under reaching thru the coils. when going back on with the nuts just wedge them in the socket with a lil tape so they dont fall out and put the nut flush aganst the hole and have your buddy thread the bolt thru and once he has the bolt therded he can cinch everything down.
i know it can be done cus i did it on my 89 in 45 mins. and on a friends GTA in about the same time , same process.

It takes a buddy, one of those otherwise useless 'flexy' extensions that you see in infomercials 1/2 hour. I got both sides done (installed) with no motor and sitting on the suspension.

Use the flexy extension from underneath, really comes into its own for only one or 2 nuts, but it was a lifesaver.

when i used my extension i came in at a 45' angle from the rearward side of the fender, more of a 45' inward and 45' upward. i'll be doing this practice again soon as i think i got a bum motor mount on the dr side.
