Question Carburator for '86 Z28?

What is a good, cheap carburator for an '86 Z28 with a 305? My buddy needs to know...

More like $300. I would go with a 500 on a 305.

yeah, summit has them for right around $220 or something liket hat. I have one for sale if your interested. email me. I have the 600 vac. sec. man. choke holley. I used it for maybe 5 weeks before I sold the car minus the eng. (and obviously the carb). it worked great on a old truck 305. I wouldnt recomend anything smaller. why limit the eng. w/the carb? the 600 is just barely a bit much for a completly stock 305, but if you add headers, nice intake, esp. if you put in a cam, you'll have to have the bigger carb.

The typical 4160 600CFM Holley worked perfect for me right out of the box. Vac. Secondary, Electric choke, I believe I got it new at a local parts house for $200-220..Plumbed the Fuel system and it fired on the second revolution...I jetted down from the included 65's to 63's I think to see if I'd gain any power and I haven't noticed any gain really but it's a nice piece. 1 year and no problems, it fires everytime, no leaks, it's VERY quick to start even in ZERO degree weather(for a carb car anyways..lol)...Goodluck!

If he is running the stock intake, he may need a spacer/adaptor if the carb you choose is a square bore. Stock manifold is a spreadbore. Might as well change the manifold as well.

I had really good results with an Edelbrock 1406 carb on my 305.
Ran high 14.s with it.

As a matter of fact.. I am the one who bought Zepher's Edelbrock.. planning on putting it on the car this winter.
BTW Zepher.. what kind of distributor is that w/ the Edelbrock?
Why should I put on a new dist. if I put on a new carb?

you'll need a vacuum advanced distributor, otherwise you won't get any timing advance.
That dist was from pep boys I believe. It is listed as a 72 Nova distributor.

aside from FI distr.s, all distributers will have mech. adv., but some dont have vacuum advance. vac. adv. just adds a touch of fuel economy. my msd distr. is mech. only advance. the good thing about it is, I can advance the timing at idle, (16deg @ 900rpm) making easier starts and smoother idleing. then at a certain rpm (determined by the size of the weights in the distr) the mech. advance will add timing (20deg. in my case @2500 rpm).

if you have the stock intake and distr., you need to repl. the distr. because the stock one is controlled by the computer. and w/o the stock carb. there, your comp. wont work properly to time the dist. right.

Ok.. thanx for the explanation.
So in other words.. I can advance the timing w/ this dist., but not my original?
What is the point of advancing the timing? How easy is it?
