Carb Problems - help!
A buddy of mine wanted to feel how quick the firebird was, so I fired it up, let it warm up for a while, then did a little 30-50 sprint and then we hit a red light, so as I coasted to a stop, the car just died. At first, I was thinking no problem, but then I started it up again which took more effort this time, but it started running VERY rough. As long as I was constantly accelerating, it would putt down the street, but when I let off the pedal, it would die again. Smoke puffs out the back, and my buddy drove over to have a look at it (I was about 2 minutes away from his house), and he said something about it running way too richly or something. We popped open the hood, no smoke or anything was coming out from under the hood, but I did hear the sound of liquid draining or something and my friend said it was gasoline draining or something like that. Do you have any hints or suggestions for me? I hope I didn't break my toy too badly! Please let me know your thoughts.
Here is a little more on what I have: AED modified Holley 750 carburetor -Mallory return style, 3-port fuel regulator -1" carb spacer -Edelbrock 'Victor Jr.' intake manifold

Holley carb excessively rich? Sounds like a blown powervalve. That's why I don't like Holley carbs - one tiny backfire can ruin your whole day. Go to the local hotrod shop and get a new powervalve, or better yet get an Edelbrock carb.
if you want real performance, keep the holley. you didn't say if the car backfired. you may have a float hung open. causing it to flood. check your fuel level and amke sure your fuel pressure is no higher than 7 psi.
poop on the edelbrock carbs.
anywyas, sounds like either a power valve torn or the stuck float/needle and seat., or the float level is just plain old adj. too high. look inside the carb while ideling. you shouldnt see any fuel driping into the carb at idle. if the float is too high, then it will either run out the vent tube into the eng, or will drip out the boosters (the things in the middle of the 4 barrels) if fuel is driping into the eng. there, take a average size screw driver, and w/the handle end, tap on the float adj. screws a few times. this will usually unstick the needle and seat assembly's. if they are stuck, then get a new set. they are pretty cheap and only take a few min.s to change out. make sure to reset the fuel float level after that though.
