Talking Carb

I have driven injected cars all my life and just got one with a carb. General question so that i dont flood anything before starting the car i press the gas once to set the choke then once more to fill the carb with fuel before starting the car?

Re: Carb

You should only have to step on the gas once. But twice should hurt anything. Just not 6 or 7 times.

Re: Carb

the carb gets filled with fuel has the motor cranks and the mechanical fuel pump pumps the fuel in

the slightest tap to the throttle would snap the choke back into place

if you were to press the throttle all the way, u would press the acelrator pump squirting liquid gas into the intake manifold, resulting in poor vaporization and a richer than normal mixture

which i believe is what everyone calls flooding

In normal day to day driving the float bowls will remain full, plus this does not provide and fuel to the engine directly only into the float bowls. On a carb. you have to have air going though the venturi and past the throttle plate, which sucks the fuel into the intake. With the choke fully closed little air can get into the carb. and therefore fuel. Causing a lean mixture and sometime back fire. A richer than normal mixture is desirable at start up, and the point of the prestartup stomp. Flooding is caused when there is so much fuel that the spark can not iginte it due to a lack of oxygen. This wont happen if the throttle is depressed just once before startup.
The owners manuals of most older cars instruct the driver to depress the throttle once before starting.
