The last time I saw something like this happen, the timing chain wasn't installed correctly. Someone installed it a few teeth off.

I'd rip the front of the engine apart and double check and make sure the sprockets line up right....

Nah - my cam came from Comp ground 4* advanced. It starts just fine

hm.. I will try advancing the distrbutor by hand when cranking as well. That sounds like a good idea.

If all else fails, I will do like dcrews says and check the sprocket alignment

Thanx guys.. keep the suggestions coming

There is a difference between advance being ground in and being installed advanced.

No I have been too busy working, dealing w/ graduation, working-out, and waiting for my bud to be free all at the same time, lol. Wednesday I will be working on that damned car from dawn to the beginning of dusk

RedIrocZ-28- The Cloyes dual-chain heavy-duty timing set instructions even said that if you want to increase bottom end torque, advance it "this" far. There were marks on the timing set that showed just where to advance it to as well

Re: Car wont start.. makes a dry exhaust noise, doens't sound gassy

The only thing is, most aftermarket cams are ground-in 4 degrees advanced.. if you advance it more, the car may not run right.

But that isn't your problem. I bet you that you don't have the dots lined up on the timing gears. The cam gear has to have the dot at the bottom, and the crank gear has to have it on the top.

Sounds like you're off a tooth (or 2)

^The Cloyes packaging that the double-chain timing kit came in said that in order to advance it so-and-so degree's, to put the dot on the chain to so-and-so-location.

Would having one of the gears off a tooth or two have enough effect to mess up the car like this?

Re: Car wont start.. makes a dry exhaust noise, doens't sound gassy

yup it would..

ask me how I know

I was helpin a friend of mine with his engine swap in his truck.

Well when he put the motor together, he put the chain in 2 teeth off.

It was spewing gas out the top of the carb and backfiring through the carb and all kinds of nasty stuff..

so yes, it can and will

Definitely Check that timing chain. Sounds like everything else is in order.

Re: Car wont start.. makes a dry exhaust noise, doens't sound gassy

Hmm... now I'm worried that I'm going to have to take off the whole front of the engine in order to fock with the stupid sprockets
How long do you think it would take to strip the whole front of the engine down, adjust the sprockets, and then bolt everything back up?
Thanks for all your help BTW...

I'd say at most 2 hours. I also would just run it dot to dot. good luck

Re: Car wont start.. makes a dry exhaust noise, doens't sound gassy

2 hours? That's not bad at all, considering my friend helping me is a traditional hot-rodder and has owned 3 of his own repair shops
But I am figuring if that IS the problem, then I am going to just say "f it" and run them dot-to-dot
Thanks again.
BTW.. I am working on it sometime tomorow, so I will deffenintly let all you guys know

Re: Car wont start.. makes a dry exhaust noise, doens't sound gassy

Ok.. a little update here. I tore the whole front of the engine down. I go to re-align the Cloyes double-chain heavy-duty timing gearset dot-to-dot, but there is three key-marks on the crank sprocket. I am thinking that they are for varying degree's of advance. WHich one should I use? There is a circular one, a house-shaped one, and a squared off one.
I told Jim that it seems like the one closest to the circle on the crank sprocket should be used. THis is in the 1 o'clock position. The other ones are in the 5 o'clock and the 7-ish o'clock positions.
Which do I use? THe one that is nearest the circle on the crank-sprocket, that is located in the 1 o'clock location?
Thanks guys,
Matt
