Car theft attempt... get a Kill switch?

Well, my car got broke into, put jimmy to the lock form the looks of it.

Any way, looks like they were trying to steel my baby, the horn cap was off (got that back on no problem) and the plastic/rubber part around the key hole on the column is broke, one of the thumb tabs is broke off... it still starts though.

I'd like to get a kill switch somewhere, does anyone have one? Where is a good place to mount it? Should it be an electrical kill? Gas kill?

I'd appreciate any info!

Thanks!

Thumbs up

You could tap into your big purple wire(starter) on the driver side wire harness. Cut it and splice in a switch mounted under your dash somewhere. When the would be theif got in and tried to crank...NO POWER TO STARTER. When you get in, you filp the toggle and turn key. Very simple procedure.

Just a suggestion

I think I'm going to go ahead and get an alarm put in, my friend said that a Ratteler alarm is a good choice, it has a starter disabeler in it.

I guess I might as well get an alarm, I'm in a big city, so it couldn't hurt.

anyone know a good place to find the rubber/plastic thumb tabs that go around the ignition key slot? I'm not even sure what it's called, so I don't know how to look for it online.

ANyone know what it is called?

Junkyards. Or get on ebay and find a guy who's parting one out (there are usually a few) and email him to see if he's got one. You may just have to get the whole keyswitch.

Being a collateral recovery agent I can give you a few tips from my experiences....

The ears ont he ign. lock are not replaceable. They break when they are removed. You will need a new ign. lock cylinder.

As far as keep your car, get a kill switch professionally installed that uses a factory accessory to de-activate. (Like holding down the power locks, turning the heat on high, setting the parking brake, etc.) The theif will never figure it out in time before getting caught or pissed off.

About how much will a ign. lock cylinder. be?

Would you guys reccomend getting a full alarm, or just a kill switch. I would like to just get a kill switch, because just about every car in my appartment has an alarm, and when one goes off, it's no big deal because they go off all the time, so I think an alarm would be usless... what you you guys do? I really have nothing in my car to steal, unless someone wants a factory steering wheel or something like that.

thanks!!

You could also just pull the fuse for the ECM. I think thats it? Anyways I pull a fuse and the cars dead til I put her back. By the time they figure it out its too late.

hm... thats a good Idea! But it seems like such a bother to do that every time I park my car... and if I would forget the fuse... I'd be screwed...

Just do what i did. Get an AutoTaser. It just locks up on your steering wheel like the club. Only thing is you can't touch it or even come within 4 inches of it. Best of all it's legal. Check it out! http://www.pimall.com/nais/autot.html
Oh yeah i don't think you can get these anymore but except ebay.

those auto tasers suck. A hacksaw thru the steering wheel and a leather jacket betweent hat and your hand and its off. i've removed at least 10 of them in my professional career. I remember the first time I thought "oh, just a new improved club" until I got knocked on my ***

i put a kill switch to the starter in the car. but i also hid a on/off switch that goes to the fuel pump... so if they find the kill switch.. the car wont start cause of no gas/

I'm going to get an alarm, and probably a fuel kill switch as well. Later when I get my job (I hope UPS takes me!!) I may get a grant steering wheel with the steering wheel release mechanism, total, it will be about $200, but I think just the alarm and kill switch will do for now. I'm getting the alarm put in this week, and probably do the kill switch right after that.

Thanks a ton guys!!

Why not just a kill switch on the ignition ? right before the coil. That way the car will crank and crank and the guy will think its a pos and won't start... and if they do find the switch they will have flooded the car. Also why even bother getting it professionally installed.. that costs too much.... You could just put the switch out of sight and somewhere where nobody would think to look... I would suggest under the seat or if you have the overhead consol that came with the flashlight, since the flashlights usually get thrown away you could put a switch in there that you can flick but it doesn't stick out a whole bunch... Anyway I would suggest not putting it on a starter. They would know right away.

THink about it though if you do an okay job of hiding the kill switch the guy probably isn't going to stick around too much... Night will be your biggest concern. In which case you get an alarm called SUPER LOUD EXHAUST.. It's great... comes on as soon as the car does and will wake you up at night... Also not everyone has one of these so it will turn heads and you will notice it is your alarm not someone elses

Oh yeah and also if you have seen one of those ones that goes on the break or clutch... just make your own... out some good solid scrap metal with a pin and a padlock... a bit of a hassel but not too bad and I doubt they will sit there with a hacksaw and cut a chunk of box iron or something....

Thats a very good Idea for the "kill switch on the ignition", if absolutly nothing happens when the key is turned, it's quite obvious that there is a kill switch somewhere... I'm going to switch plans and do that

Think an alarm would still be good?

Anyone have a grant steering wheel, possibly with the wheel release mechanism? I'd really like to do that, because it's very visible that even if they could start the car, they couldn't drive it.

I'm going to wait a few days before I do anyting (the steering wheel will wait for a longer period of time, at least till I get a job).

Thanks again guys, and sorry for all of these questions, I feel like there is a conspiracy against me and my car here! haha!
