Can you run 3.73 rear with a 700R4?

Using a Magnum 270 cam with a 3500-6000rm powerband is this a bit too low? Has a 2200 stall TC. We were actually looking for a 3.42 rear when we found this in a 4WD S truck. Has posi too. I would think with the OD it would not be bad but it seems like everyone prefers the 3.42 with the auto. I know the 700R4 has the low first gear but no lower than a T5 manual. Any ideas?

Autos came with 3.23 and T5s came with 3.42. A4 people went to 3.42 to make the car a little more peppy without sacrificing too much. Although many have also gone with the 3.73 as a compromise gear. More power but not obnoxious on the street

If you aren't planning on much highway driving and only want fast street or strip action, then the 3.73s are OK.

I get 22 mpg on cruise control and 15 in the city with 3.73 and with 4.10 I got 15 mpg throughout. With 3.73, it didn't seem all that different from my 3.23.

I love my 3.73s and I am running a TPI . They are perfect at the track, as the RPMs are at 5800-6000 when I go through the traps. My car, with a stock L98 went 13.58 @ 99mph with the gear. Before the gear it went 14.01@99. These were both on drag radials. The TPI falls down on top some but the quickness out of the hole more than makes up for it. Go 3.73s and you will be happy! The more gear you have the less load your tranny has to carry also so it should live longer.

It depends on the year, they came as high as 2.73 for auto and 3.08 for the t5, and as high as 3.73 for both the autos and manuals.

i'm running a 3.73 on my 700-r and to be honest with my engine combo i could probably use more. it feels more comparable to my l98 with 3.23 setup with the loss of torque i have with the miniram.

stupid tpis.....

What would be wrong with the Mini-Ram? I suppose if you have more gear you would be set up higher where the MR supposedly works better. However your mpg will definately take a beating. My cruising went down from 300 a tank to 200 a tank switching to a 4.10 gear set.

Then you have an issue there. That or you are making more than 600HP because you should be doing way better than that even in the city.

without a doubt there is some tunning that needs to be worked as you and i know that....however the power is up there so that doesn't help either. i was getting roughly 17mpg with similar tunning style on the 383 and it was still a little rich however it was only 300 rwhp. this one is.....well lets just say when things are working right its alot more. i need to get it dynoed before making any true calls though.

300 HP? That translates to 350 at the crank. I think you could get much more than that from a 383. You should be making 400 unless you have a lousy intake, stock chip or a peanut cam.
