You will driving though the Pony's crap on this one. Don't even think you have fast car .A stock TBI is nothing but a slow excuse for a V-8 from GM .

You guys look at things all wrong. Keep your 3rd gen and just buy or build a new motor for it. It will all bolt right in. I hear that go buy a 350 TPI thing all the time. Newsflash stock those arent very fast either. Just swap out a motor in the one you have now. Do a few suspension and exhaust mods and you can have a street beast. Actually suspension should be done first but I know its hard to will yourself to do that.

thanks darth, i was thinkin along the same lines. now what kind of motor? ive got a part time job (im still in high school) and all i need to pay for is gas insurance and my car so i'll have some extra $. do i save up and get an LT1 and drop it in, or get a 350 and build it up then drop it in.

My 87 TPI car with a T5 and LB9 305 could hang with stock stangs you describe. It is now a carbed L98 with a WCT5 and comp cams 269HR cam. It was a simple swap and can hang with LT1s. Ls1s are a different story. I've got some heads to port to make that leap.

My brother currently has a 91 RS 305 TBI. A 383 with iron eagle heads is just waiting for the small base circle cam to arrive from comp cams and it will be going in. He is also going carb.

My transformation cost me around 1500 bucks. His will be at least double. But my point is you have many options. You could even keep your 305. With ported TPI 305 heads, a 260ish XE comp cam, upgraded TBI or a carb swap and decent exhaust your 305 would run pretty good. 305 TPI heads can almost be found for free.

Go check out thirdgen.org in the tech articles and you will get some good ideas.

Im in the same position and bought all my parts myself (look in my sig Ive bought quite a few things) You have to be very goal oriented. Pick out something you want to buy next and save up for it you cant expect to get it all done at once. I'm currently planning to build a 396 stroker out of a 350 block. IMO the best way to go is build a mild stroker you can build one fairly cheap. Or you can just take a 350 drop in forged pistons and buy a nitrous kit. PM if you have any more questions, that I may be able to help with.

hey guys appreciate all the comments and keep em coming. 87ROC- its a daily driver and ill be goin on a 500 mile trip 2-3 times a year so i wanna go fuel injection, carbs seem like a hassle. im pretty sure im gonna stick with Darth's idea as far as a stroker, whether it be 383 or 396 im not sure yet. 3.875" crank for a 396 or do i also have to bore it or different size rods? any of yall that have built your own motors--where can i find a block for cheap. junkyard or is that too risky? id like to get a new one but forget it. what kind of compression should i be aiming for, 10-10.5 for the street? how much can my tranny hold? im planning on gettin parts as i go and aimin to be finished by the end of next summer or hopefully spring.

Here's a nice little article on modifying the L03. About midway down he talks about making the TBI perform:

You could stick with the 305 and build it up. The reason the 305 TBI has such a bad name is the parts that GM put on it, change the heads, cam, intake and do a lot of little things and you can easily be into the low 13s and high 12s, add a 125 shot of nitrous on and low 12s are even possible. Some people work hard at making the LO3 fast just for the wow factor when you beat somebody. www.thirdgen.org has a TBI section full of people that are doing this.

You could mod a 305 or get a junkyard/used350TPI or just build you a carbed motor of your choice and displacement. You just need to price each project and see where you stand.
My 91 RS is a bolt on 305 and outruns some stangs but would've been cheaper and maybe faster with a motor swap.
Last year it ran a 9.30@77MPHs in the 1/8 burning to rich with a stock muffler. I believe now it'll run 8.80s with the new AFPR,muffler and tune up.

See sig. The time is from today at SLP day in Orlando. I know I was running faster than some LT1s (w/o traction) and a L98 vette that was running high 14s all day.

Quit telling people you can't make a LO3 move, my car is a full weight street car running on goodyear GS-Cs. 115,000 miles original engine.

2.15 60'
14.48 @ 96.28 mph shifting at 5000-5200 rpm

As far as building a bigger engine, I'd say any parts optimal for the 305 and LO3 heads will NOT be the best for a bigger engine.
