Camshaft upgrade...
I am wanting to replace the camshaft on my 1989 Camaro RS.. I am eventually going to get a new chip, exhaust, intake, headers, etc.. but someone said i should replace the camshaft first. If i changed it now i'd have to get a new one after i got the other stuff replaced if i wanted the best i can get, correct? I really want to avoid that though... what should i do? Get the camshaft and rocker arms and all that now and do the rest later, or vice-versa?
umm.. if u looking for a specific order to do these mods then i would do it like this:

- Exhaust (Headers, and cat-back)
- Heads & Cam (possibly do chip here)
- Chip & Intake
- Stall converter & gears (just gears if its a standard)
- Suspension sub-frames, control arms, shocks, springs)

That's part of what i was looking for...sorry my original message wasn't very clear. The other part of it was what Camshaft should i get for it. I was looking at the Comp Cams catalog and the Magnum 268 or 270 seem to be what i need, but i'm not sure. Any recommendations as to what i should get?
Definately Definately without a doubt Call Comp Cams or Crane Cams and ask them, they will match u exactly to what u need, they will ask you questions about what u have on your car and they will tell you exactly what to buy.. dont rely on charts or whatever, the camshaft is them more intricate part of your motor, u screw it up or purchase the wrong one, your power won't be what it could be.. call the experts, they love to talk!! good luck bro ~mike

I wouldn't go that big with a cam personally if your car is a TBI 305. I have a Comp Cams 270H and thats the max I would go on these heads/intake on my 350. They just won't flow enough for a bigger cam.
Really, you should get headers and full exhaust first! Then after that you get gears/shift kit of some sort. Then start doing motor mods. All the other stuff is just a precursor to the motor buildup and all parts are reuseable. These parts will also gain you a pretty hefty amount of power. Reuseable is the key when you plan on changeing your setup in the future. A cam for your application right now would not be reuseable.

Aha.... thanks both of you. I was planning on getting headers first, how much does a full cat-back exhaust cost...i'll want 3" right? What kind of muffler do i want? should i get an exhaust cutout? I have an exhaust place near me that'll do whatever i want for cheap. I just recently got a new muffler and tailpipes on, It was a IMCO High Output, i'm assuming i should probably get something better than that, and if i want 3" i'll have to anyway. Sucks though because i just got that muffler put on, and i ordered some exhaust tips, i may have to have him change that order... *sigh* there's $40 down the hole, and about $100 more coming out of my pocket :/
