Cam For 305

I am looking for some help with a cam. I have a 87 w/305 and only 190 hp. I am wanting to install the cam which will give me 225 hp. Does anyone have any info on the cam that I need to install. I am wanting to keep the car as stock as possible. I was also wondering if there is any thing else that I would have to change when changing the cam. I was told that there was 2 different cams for that engine. Thanks for the help.

I heard the LT1 cam is a awsome cam to swap in you should hit your 225hp goal with that cam

But why is your hp goal so low? do you have the LB9 auto (TPI)

Yeah, if it's the factory stock motor you've got the "peanut" cam. Agreed that an LT-1 stock cam would be a good upgrade and you can buy them for just about nothing from somebody who has hotrodded their LT-1 and taken the cam out. It's a bolt-in for your existing stock cam.

The LT-1 is just about identical in specs to the higher output TPI cam but has even a smidge more lift, which can only help the situation.

This is for Chris s85z28, You are correct. I do have the LB9 w/TPI but 225 is not the goal that I am shooting for. I am looking at a goal of 275 - 300hp. I am planning on installing the LT1 cam with true dual exhaust, stage II chip and also the Holley StealthRam. I am hoping that this will meet my goal. If anyone has any info on what else that I need to do it would help.

You'll need to port and polish your stock heads. You can get excellent results by following my instructions linked at the end of my sig. Should be worth 30 hp easy

To complete your transition to the 275 to 300 hp region you will have to siamese your runners and port out your plenum. I believe if you go to www.thirdgen.org and ask in their TPI forum, someone will show you to a site that shows you exactly what you want to do

Another vote for the LT1 cam

Just a heads up, when I added one to my 88 Camaro it wouldn't breathe well up top. I think it was either the springs (never upgraded them) or she just wasn't getting enough fuel.

Maybe you're supposed to get a chip after the cam?

No, most people do fine with the stock chip. The problem is that the LT1 cam moves the power band up to around 5200 rpm while the TPI engines can get much past 4500 rpm due to their intake design. You will need to port the runners and plenum to alleviate this.
