Buyin a 3rd gen
An L98 (350TPI) car would by far be your best bet. They can only be had as autos.
Don't be like me and get a 5-speed 305 car--8 months later and the tranny is already changed (T56) and the new engine is in the garage (383). It's easier to just change trannies than it is engine/tranny. Oh easier on the wallet too. Just my $.02
I'd also go TPI for many reasons. Fuel Injection--reliable daily driver. Much higher "cool" factor. Etc.

Why should get a Camaro?? He already has one. LOL Get a '88-'90 Trans Am GTA, or a '91-'92 Formula.
If you want to go fast get a 350 TPI Formula. The Formula's were the lightest Thirdgen's, and the '91 and '92 350 TPI's had the highest hp numbers of the third generation's run. ('82-'92) They were rated at 245hp.

The 88-90 Irocs also have some pretty strong 5.7's
