Friend of mine is building a 383 stroker for his full size 87' pickup. What cam and heads would be good for mad torque between 2500-5000 rpm? I was thinking about vortec heads and maybe a 4X4 cam say 220/230 around 480 lift with 9.5 compression. That should be good for say 425lbs maybe??

 

Vortec heads are limited to .480 lift unless you machine them for high lift but they are a good head for what he is doing. IMO 220/230 is a little high for a low rpm torque motor.

 

Agreed, that cam is a little too big. Knock 10* off those durations and you're going to like it a lot better in a 4x4. Keep the LSA relatively tight, but not rediculous- 112* or so.

Heads are up to you. Vortecs are good bang for the buck if you have the intake and valvetrain to work with them.

 

Check out Comp's Xtreme 4x4 cams...designed for low and midrange torque.

The cam sounds like it's well within the ballpark. It's a stroker motor also which is a factor. 112 or 114 LSA if it's avaliable and intake manifold is a big factor. I'm hoping this is a carb setup so the Vortec heads and a Performer RPM Air Gap will be the easy parts to include. www.sdpc2000.com has some GREAT packages that include Vortec heads modified for more lift(if needed), Air Gap intake, gaskets, bolts, cams, etc. Look into that.
