broken transmission mount ?????????

I think i have a broken transmission mount. If i excellerate hard or if i hit a big bump it is like somthing slaps the underside of my car.. If this is what it is. how is the easiest way of fixing it ? how hard is it ??? i changed the fuel pump (in tank) a while back, easier or harder then that ??

thanks

If you can change the fuel pump without cutting then you could do this in your sleep. Jack the car up all the way and use a jack to lift the tail end off. If it moves and seperates itself from the crossmember, you need to move it a little more and then remove the crossmember. Lower the tranny a little then and attach the mount. Raise it up slowly and you will see the crossmember rise. When you can, bolt it and tighten it up.

get a poly tranny mount... if it breaks like mine did about a month after i installed it, then go get yourself one of those energy mounts off summitracing.com for like 30 bucks or something around there... it's worth the money

mine makes a clink noise when i go over a bump and its seems to make a schreech noise from under the car if i accelerate hard from a dead stop
could this be exhaust making the cling noise? and the exhaust also schreeching from having a hole or being clogged somewhere?
or are they 2 different probs

if it was your tranny mount, you'd hear a big thud everytime you step on it hard... sounds like you might have an issue with your exhaust... i'd go under the car to see if any of the pipes are loose

wanna know how to see if it's the tranny mount? pop the hood and start the car... have a friend watch the engine while you put it from park to drive.... when it's in drive, hold the break and give it gas. if the engine looks like it's jumping when you give it gas (don't just tap it, cuz then you wont see anything), then it's your tranny mount. then jack up the car and look at the mount... usually you can tell right away from looking at it if it's broken... try doing that and tell me what happens.

How about just jacking up the tail end of the tranny and see if it seperates from the crossmember?

Jacking the tailshaft is the best way to be sure, but it involves putting the rear of the car on jackstands. You can pop the hood and watch for movement much more easily and usually tell if it needs a mount or not.

The most obvious and I can't believe any of the replies have not asked this is, does the shifter lift up under acceleration? If you are hearing a bang/clunk from the tranny area and the shifter is literaly pushing your hand skyward than that is the tranny mount.

On the other hand, if you are hearing a banging or clunking noise and your tranny is not making any out of the norm uprward movements, than it is your torque arm mount bolt that has worked itself loose.

Thae tourqe arm ins the long piece of stamped steel that connects the transmission to the rear end housing. The mount is on the transmisson tail shaft in rubber. It is easy to get to and tighten down. THe trans mount change should take a whole 15 minutes tops
