best way to tell it's 350
best way to tell it's 350
The auto 85' IROC Z28's came with 305 and was Q-jeted.
This car is said to have a 350 in it.
I know thers a casting # on the rear left side over the bell housing, but I don't think I will be able to see it.
I know right where it is too.
Theres a nother one that will say 5.7 or 5.0. I can't rember where it is, eather 100% visable on the left side (when viewed from under the car) or it's covered by the bell housing.
I could pull a valve cover and get a head casting #, but some times those don't tell a damn thing.
Like the last time I ran some head #'s I got " truck, 305 and 350".
No cc's or valve sizes.
I know I could all ways pull a head and get a ruler.
Any one know where the easy to see #'s are?

I just looked at an 87-up Tpi engine I have on a stand right now, and the only identifying marks on the block I could see were directly behind the drivers side cylinder head. I would think that with a flash light and a flexible neck you should be able to see the marks. I personally would have a wiring harness running behind the cylinder heads, so if you do it will have to be moved, if not you should be able to get a straight shot at the numbers. The numbers directly behind the drivers head on the block say either 5.7 or 5.0. I know I have enough room to get my hands behind the heads when hooking up ground wires and such, so you should be able to see from above. If you can't, get a blind guy that can read brail, and get him to stick his hand down there and feel for the 5.7 or 5.0.
The easiest way to see that casting number is to get under the car. You'll need a flashlight and a long extendable swivel head mirror - Sears sells them. Run it up along the trans and the number is found between the driver's head and trans flange. All late model blocks will say 5.0 or 5.7. Anything older than an 85 block will have a casting number. Check www.mortec.com for number references.
