best trans for a tpi

lookin to have a mid to hi 11 sec tpi next yr with a dfi. i seen some cool lt1 trans's but what can i put in a 3rd gen to hold. i like the 700r4 cuz the OD but i hear there not strong enough even wen built. i seen a trans that had a b&m shifter on it in a lt1 and to shift it you would slam it back. so i guess it was kind of like a manual trans with out having to clutch. it looked pretty fun to drive.... any idea of what this **** was??

odds are he was running a 700R4 or a 350 Turbo

there is nothing wrong with a 700R4 if built right, it is just as strong , if not stronger, then a 350 Turbo when built right

I agree. A built 700R4 can take plenty of abuse. If you were expecting to dip into the 10's or single digits, I'd say you should be looking at a TH350/400, but a well-built 700 should handle 11's just fine.

If you go to summitracing, and look at B&M shifters, there are many to choose from. The most common one in f-bodies is a Megashifter.

A modified 700R4, especially if it's an Auto now. There are many books and articles in mags about building them up, or you can buy one for under $1500.
You'll need: a 2800 stall converter, Corvetter servo, a Racing Master rebuild kit, governor weight kit, good tranny cooler, improved tranny pump, hardened drum, hardened input/output shaft etc....
To go that fast reliably, I'd buy one with a warrantee, like B&M or TCI etc.Hi-Po trans cooler(bypass the radiator) and a 2800 stall, Zexel style posi, 3.42-3.73 gears, cast rear cover/girdle .
