Best catback for a 91' Z28?

I'm currently looking fot a catback to put under my 91' Z28, and would like to know which one is the best? I heard great stuff about the hooker cat back, but there's no such set fot my year!

I was going for Flowmaster, but since I heard some bad stuff on them, well, I'm not going to pay 300$ bucks for something that I'm gonna change 2 years later...

I looked for SLP, but two thing annoy me, the "drone" sound that people are talking about, and also the fact that new catback come with both exhaust tip on the dirver's side! It may not seems to be such a big deal, but in term of look, I think that it looks crap.. God , I don't have a v6!

Maybe not what you're looking for, but I've had really good luck with the Dynomax Superturbo systems from Walker. Nice deep rumble, not loud but you can hear it. Good smooth bend pipes, aluminized, fit really good, not a lot of money, at Jegs usually. Google search on dynomax or Jegs website will get you started.

I don't know who told you the SLP catback has a "drone sound" ?? Unless you like the car to be so loud that you can't hear yourself think, is that a sound you wan?. My SLP catback has a very good sound to it, when you start up it lets people know you have something under the hood ( Note! you do have to something there) and when you are driving around it dosen't blast you out of the car. But it will when you put your foot into it. Also if those big 2 5/8 dia dual pipes on one side bother you, wait until some fool thinks you are a V6. But people who know cars will know itsd a SLP system. Another plus it is all Stainless steel and will last a lifetime.

what have you heard bad about flowmaster? I'm going with a custom 3inch exhaust with LT headers and a 40 series muffler...i've read up on that muffler, and a lot of people are very satisfied..i'm just wondering what you herad bad about them???

If you plan to keep the car for a very long time, I would use Borla or SLP at the least. Currently with what I am doing to the Vette, I bought a set of Borla Stingers. I personally never cared for the look or sound of a system. I buy it because it flows well for the money and the longevity. After a bit of use the SLP will turn dark so if that bothers you, go with Borla.

It's not the fact that I heard lots of bad thing on them, it's just that I read about too many people changing their Flowmqaster for something better and being more satisfied... It's just that I want the best from the start...

Re: Best catback for a 91' Z28?

This is comming from someone with the factory exhaust so I don't know how much my opinion counts.
I think any decent 3in mandrel bent catback flows almost the same. The only exception I can think of are the real cheap ones probably don't do to well and the borla that lets you bypass the muffler would flow better. I think what you should really look for in your catback is longativity and the sound. I would take a look at the hooker catback it seems to be fairly popular and I havn't really heard any bad things about it.

My order of search would be: 1. max flow. 2. Longevity. 3. Cost

Re: Best catback for a 91' Z28?

I am only running a 305 right now, but I had a custom exhaust bent up and I like it way better than any one I have seen sold on the market. I spent right at $350 for everything including installation, so depending on your area you might want to look into that. It is using a Magnaflow muffler and a Catco cat and a lot of people comment on how nice it sounds and it is nice and quiet inside the car.

Re: Best catback for a 91' Z28?

i tossed out my borla fake dual setup after a flowmaster 2 chamber single exit outflowed it on the dyno. i now have a custom 4" setup with spintech muffler. i love spintech over borla, flowmaster and definately slp but the 4" i think is overkill. i'm going to be going back to 3" with my spintech and custom lt's.

by the way, the fast cars are the ones with only one tail pipe....or sometimes none.

But what of the flow charistics and the material used? Will it flow as best as possible for a system that size and is that enough flow for your system? For that price, I am skeptical if it is properly radiused and mandrel bent. Also, what is the quality of the material used?

Re: Best catback for a 91' Z28?

This was from a shop in the heart of NASCAR. It was fabbed up when I was living in North Carolina. The shop owner was a freind of a friend so I was able to stand there while they built it so I know that it was bent properly. It flows very well for my car. I have a few people tell me that my car is quite fast for a 305. I am going to be getting dyno numbers on Sept. 11 to truly find out how much it added to a generally stock motor. I do not know what material was used but it has survived 3 Minnesota winters.
