Well if you are stuck on a Camaro instead of say a Trans Am GTA, I'd say get an IROC-Z. 1990 was the best year for it, it had the most HP (245) and the updated gauges. But for any year third gen the 5.7L TPI engine is the best.

Any 350 tpi car is your best bet, the 90+ ones were speed density and had a little more hp. The G92 305 5-speeds were no slouch either, they run just about 14.8 bone stock, give or take a .1.

hey I'm happy with my 85 z 28... Irocs are nice but I have the power windows and such with my car (I still do like IROCS a bit more) I like my ground effects better than the older ones and almost as much as the newer ones with the vents, I also like the older gauges but not the double gage.. It does lack power... that is why I am looking at buiying a 400 sbc at the moment.

I'd say get a m5 i-roc 90 & up they're lighter and if you do not feel like modding the 5.0 then get your hands on a 350 and mod it slightly and layeth the smacketh on unsuspecting fords and 4th gens.

And then you can watch your tranny grenade from the torque of the 350. The 5 speeds in the Camaro cant hold up to the torque of a 350 and don't last long. Drop a 350 and a t-56 and you'll be set.

I agree that a 6 spd 350 swap is the ultimate package. Do this and enjoy your torque terror on the streets.

The best thirdgens are the 89-92 305 5-speeds and 350 automatics with dual catalytic converters, and 4-wheel disc brakes. The 89 is MAF and the 90-92 is speed density. The newer ones are slightly better but its a personal preference.

Or you can search high and low for an 89 Turbo Trans Am.

Yes indeed the L98 was the most powerful engine of the thirdgen, but I don;t know about "slightly modding" to keep up with a fourthgens LS1... no i don;t think so. Maybe keep up with the LT1 but not the LS1 - that'd require serious modding.

I like the 91-92 Z28s with the L98, the best. My next choice would be an 87- 90 Iroc.
But the ultimate 3rd gen would be an 89 TTA.

Hahha, that is so funny. I got a '88 Trans Am with a T5 and a tbi 305. It was ok. Then I dropped a 355 sbc with performer RPM heads, RPM intake, 750 carb, etc. Threw a new clutch in too while I was at it. The car woke up you could say, it gained 3 seconds in the 1/4 mile. At sea level, the thing could go low low 13s at tons of mph in its best tune. Oh, I also added 4.10s at one point after the motor install. I never ran anything other then balding set of Comp VR4s. Have pics racing and beating ls1 vette at the track. Yes, I too loved to beat on counltess 5.0 and 4th gen unsuspecting owners, beating every one I raced on the street.

HOWEVER, I TOO had to go through 5 T5s.....so a turbo350 later I realized that with some more tuning, my car wents just as quick as it did with a T5 but it did have a slightly lower mph. Not long ago the th350 bit the dust, and now the car has a "temporary" V6 T5 with another V6 T5 sitting in the garage as emergency spare, while I debate on what to do with the car and should it be another th350 or a th700 R4. With 4.10s and a world class T5 car went 174mph at just less then 6000RPM in fifth gear. I liked the .61 OD. Now I also own a stockish LT1, and knowing how cocky a 4th gen owner can be when lined up with a thrid generation, I can say third gens with serious ***** are trully priceless! I like my third gen.
