Post bad blow by and what causes it?

i have alot of smoke that comes off of my valves
and oil fill cap....really bad blow by..i had to put a breather on it or my oil would shoot out of my dip stick until i get about half a quart low......then it will eventully stop...its an older 305 and i would expect things to this nature but it doesnt rob power...
is this a bad sign?
anything cheap i can do?
thanks again
Dan

well make sure the pcv system is working correctly. make sure the valve is good and it is hooked up to eng. manifold vacuum. are you sure your not over filling it? it should take 5 qrts.(w/a short filter)other then that maybe your rings are bad or the cly. walls are glazed. good luck. chris
