Arg... SLP way to much, other headers that are great?
Dang SLP's ... running up into 6 - 7 hundred. Bah ! So what else would be a good header to buy? Im looking to put them on my 305 right now, but transfer onto a 350 thats been bored over to a 383. Will i have a problem with all the extra cubic inches for the headers on the 305? Or will they work fine for both applications?

Go to www.summitracing.com and order a free, home-delivered catalog. They have quality headers from several different companies to fit Camaros; Hedman, Hooker, Edelbrock, Dynomax (maybe) to name a few. Pick your favorite, pick up the phone and call. They may run $200-$300, but hey, it beats $600-$700 for the SLP stuff. It is ridiculously expensive, isn't it? Also, Summit is the place to go to get other go-fast parts at a really decent rate. I am shocked and amazed that more people on this site don't list them as a good source. They're the bomb-diggety for any hard-core buildup.

Headers that work well on your 305 are going to be too small for your 383. Get a good header with a 1 3/4 primary for your 383. Full lengths will make more power but become more work and cost when you are doing the rest of the exhaust. I had SLP's and they are a great header, look for a used set nothing can really go bad with them and the wall thickness on the tubes make them really quiet.
nonsense. hedman longtubes, summit part number HED-68460, are longtubes with 1 5/8 primaries which is more than enough for a 305 and will increase power, and they have 3 inch collectors. i wouldnt hesitate for a second to throw these long tubes on a 305, 350, or 383. they will increase power incredibly over stock manifolds in all cases.
and get this....they are about $105 bucks plus shipping. cant beat it.

OHH Come on guys, $600-$700?!?! What the hell are you looking at?
I got my SLP 1 3/4" headers WITH the Y-pipe for $382 including shipping RIGHT TO MY DOOR.
Part #:30005
For your 305, and you live in Michigan so I know you don't need the emissions crap, your part number is 30004.They are $399.99 as of right now according to my SLP catalog. This is a far cry from $600. Get the SLP's, mine haven't even begun to show any signs of rust yet...They are the best for a reason.

I ran Hedman long tubes 1 5/8" on my car when I had a 383. I was running high 11's at 117 mph.
Bigger is not always better. A 1 3/4" primary tube on a SBC is huge even for a 383. Many people who run the 1 3/4" headers on a street vehicle would see an improvment in performance if they installed 1 5/8" headers. Maybe if you were running a 406 constantly shifting at 6000+ rpm would you really need 1 3/4" headers. Just don't buy tiny 1 1/2" tube headers. Those are way to small. They'll work with a 305 or a 350 that's close to bone stock.
You get what you pay for. Typical mild steel headers may be cheap but will also rot out in about 5 years. You can increase their life by getting them coated. Stainless headers last much longer but also cost a lot more. My truck has Edelbrock 409 stainless headers. Although they turn brown, they're just as good as new and have been on the truck for close to 10 years now.
The other end of the scale is a true race engine. 1 3/4" tube is entry level. You can get 2 1/8" tube SBC headers but you better have a gold card to buy them.

Chuck: How can one get 10% off when ordering from Summit?

They have codes out there occasionally, I think there's a topic in the lounge lookin for the code... but I went to there (Ohio!) during their Summit Super X weekend and everything waas 10% off
