How something sounds is very subjective.
I put the Borla catback with single high flow converter and smooth "Y" pipe on my 87 Vette. I thought it sounded great and so did all my friends. For what ever it's worth.

Isn't Borla tunable? I thought I remember reading that they had different inserts to adjust the tune of your exhaust.

They are tunable if you get the cat back system. My old muffler rusted out and GM gave me a new one. I kept it and sold it to buy a XR1 Raceline muffler by Borla and had a single 90 deg pipe bent. I do notice that it had a lower tone when I put on the intercooled tip because it cut it too short.

I think the firing order has a lot to do with your exhaust note.
The firing order between the early 60's up to 97 V8's was the same. The LS1 is when they changed the firing order. I've noticed the LS1 doesn't sound anything like the L98,LT1 motor when it comes to exhaust.
I have a B&B Tri-flow on my IROC w/o a cat and it sounds great.
