Re: Anyone have Crate engines

Slightly old thread, but I'm slightly old too.

I like the stock look and kept the TPI. I think carb would have been easier and given more HP right away, but like I said, I like the TPI look.

GMPP fastburn 385. 350cu in. (385hp/385ftq). Scoggin Dickie large mouth Vortec intake, AS&M large tube runners, Gasket match-Ported/Siamesed- internally polished plenum, Holley 52mm TB. Heddman D-tube Vortec head shorty headers. 24# injectors.

Ran 13.7 w/ a stock tune- thats a L98 computer chip! Just got it together and got that run in before I left for the sandbox. Having TPIS burn me a chip to go with the upgrades and will be waiting for me when I get home in June.

Open the hood and to the untrained eye everything looks stock except for the headers. Hope it leaves those pesky Neon SRT-4 guys scratchin' their heads.

Ouch!

Hopefully the new calibration wakes it up. My old 91 L98 went 14.2 completely stock.

No doubts you'll get it sorted out - and chop a second off that E/T, most likely.

I'm hoping. I was disappointed with the time too, but I figured since the chip is telling it it's a 245hp motor- so much air and fuel, the new program should really wake it up. Street tires and a full weight car- power everything, Bose trunk speakers, dynomatted(30lbs). I lost 30lbs in the last 3 months, that might help too.

I'm just wondering what setups are out there in 3rd gens.

I went with the Scoggin Dickey Vortec TPI engine and a rebuilt 700R4. The hp and tq both peak at 4200RPM's and are 357hp 416 lb/ft. I have not gone to the track with it but it feels pretty strong. I'm afraid to push it too hard off the line as the rear end is all stock.

I guess my next step is the get a Ford 9" rear. Any idea of what year is best? Would the newer 8.8" fit?
I installed a ZZZ crate motor, but removed the 113 Aluminum heads and used my AFR 180's, and also swapped out the 235/235 cam for a comp 214/228 cam. Ported the tpi to match the super ram base manifold, 52mm tb. These are the most noticeable differences over the stock L98.

1987IROC350, do you have any 1/4 mile or dyno numbers from your combo, interested to see what it's putting down.

I've been off the site a while. I have not been to the track or dyno. I've got a few other toys I've been dealing with so money was tight. I have not had the bigger inj. put in or a chip flash. I've driven it just 1000 miles in 18 months. I'll try to get it done within 6 months. Delays delays
