Aluminum L98 Heads

I'm looking for a good set of heads for my 305 TPI, I've got a 1990 IROC Converitble and I was wondering if the Aluminum L98 Heads that came on the Corvettes would be a good purchase for the money if I can them. Or would it be better to go with a set of CNC ported heads?? I'm not sure, any other suggestions welcome.

One thing to consider on the Aluminum L-98 heads is that they have no provisions for EGR.

I was going to do the L98 head thing. Changed my mind after I found a good deal on the "camel (double hump" 2.02's. My brother has a set for $475 plus shipping, complete from a vette with about 50,000 miles.

If I did get the L98 heads, couldn't I just block off my EGR and get a chip programmed so it wouldn't throw the code??

I have read and seen flow numbers showing the L98 heads flow about as bad as any production head ever made for the small block chevy. I don't think they would be worth the effort or money spent on gaskets even if you got them free. See if you can find the flow numbers on the S/R Torquers by world products. If they are more than 210 cfm at .400 in lift then you will probably be improving.

Read the sad numbers on L98 flow capabilities here:

http://www.chevyhiperformance.com/ed...=745&aid=41598

They are worse than 441 or 882 smog heads. Look at how much better the Vortecs flow. Definitely investigate aftermarket.

Ok the L98 head is out... What suggestions does anyone have for a 305 TPI on a 1990 Converitble IROC. Of course the car is Speed Density and the entire motor is all stock, what's the best head I can get for the money??

Check out this part # at www.summitracing.com WRL-042750-1. These are called replacement heads but have 170cc intake runners. That's probably 10 to 15 cc better than yours and come with screw in studs so you can put a high lift cam in if you want. It says it will fit the 305 and has the bigger 1.94 in intake valve. I personnaly have not seen the flow numbers but for 364 dollars a head complete it would be worth looking into.

There are only three heads worth considering for a 305 engine. TPI 305 heads, L98 aluminum heads, and S/R Torquer 305 heads.

Do a search on this board and you'll find all the info you want about L98 aluminum heads. I've posted it plenty of times.

Go to the junkyard and get a set of regular old 305 heads, just make sure they are not from a TBI car.

Then follow the instructions linked at the bottom of my sig. That will give you a set of heads that will flow like Vortecs--over 450 hp--but only cost you $400 US maximum.
