adjusting the timing
Find the tan wire with the black line and disconnect it. It'll be near the firewall on the passenger side of the car. Crawl under car and find the timing mark on the balancer and paint it(I use wifeys finger nail polish). Crank car, then get a timing gun and see where you're at. Give it bout 6 to 10 degrees plug the wire back together and check for spark knock. Repeat until audible knock then back timing back down a degree or 2. This is how I do it. May not be the right way but works for me.
GET A TIMING LIGHT before you try this.
The idea that you can do it without a timing light is crazy. I would only do that if I was in the middle of nowhere without a light.
Disconnect the tan wire which is around the passenger strut tower and you should see that the engine RPM drops. Connect the timing light to the battery and the pickup to the #1 wire and shine it on the timing marks and see what you have. Set it to 6 deg. Knock occures even when you cannot hear it and the ECM will retard the timing if it senses it.
