A4 Stock 87' Iroc 305 Cam specs?

Anyone know the specs of the stock cam that came on the 87' irocs? mine is auto with a 305...i know the 5 speeds had a bigger cam....

thnx

edit: how much power can i "safely" extract from a 305 TPI?

i WANT like 325HP....is that possible to do on my 305 with hurting it.....right now im looking to put an LT1 cam in....new pistons....what else can i do....i was told that heads really aren't worth the cost for me because the flow might not be needed (or something....)

so cam, pistons.....headers and exhaust/intake and maybe i can pull 300HP?

edit: also....does my iroc have a posi rear? sorry for all the questions

They are called the "peanut" cam

.350 lift intake and .385 lift exhaust. Duration is less than anything else ever invented.

The mods in my sig will take you where you want to go. 300 hp is straightforward with a 305 but you WILL need to rework your heads. Follow the link at the bottom of my sig to learn how. If you need any advice or help just let me know. I just did a set of 305 heads and they are the untapped gold mine of smallblock Chevroletdom

Thanks for the info

If I order an engine rebuild kit from summit....I'll have to figure out what I need, but if the new pistons bring my compression to like....10.2.5 or 10.5 how much HP should I gain if I put in a bigger cam? My buddy says that since my stock cam is so small I should get 30-40HP with a new cam, how much could I get "about" if I up my compression to like 10.5? Do I have to worry about cylinder damage when I increase my compression? I think the stock 305 Irocs had a 9.3:1 .....I would THINK I could get like 250-265 HP from a new cam and piston/rebuilt kit....

Only thing is that cams are pretty cheap and are easy to put in....the pistons on the other hand would require me to pull my engine.....how much would a auto shop charge me to do that work? Probably 500$ in labor? The kit is like 400$.....that's 900$.....unless I'm getting 50+HP from the rebuild I don't think It's cost effective.....

Does the 305 get reduced gains from heads and exhaust? When you replace heads do you have to pull the engine ?

Finally....the summit rebuilt kits....would I want forged or hypereutectic and whats the difference....thnx

If you are considering rebuilding the 305, don't. It is not worth it when you can simply get a 350 or larger block and rebuild it for the same price, while getting much better performance.

If your 305 shortblock is in good condition, then go ahead and buy parts for it that will work equally well on a 350 when the 305 dies.

That is the only economically intelligent approach to this issue.

Well my 305 only has 75k miles on it...(I say "only" cause it's a 15 year old car) She runs perfectly.....I am fairly confident I'll get 120+k out of the 305 before it becomes unreasonable to keep it running.

What parts would I want that would work well on a 350? I WANT to get a 350....but the time and cost isn't there. When you say get a larger block do you mean just buy a bare block and build the engine myself? As opposed to going out and buying a LT1 or a crate? All I know is I don't have the money needed to swap an engine right now, but at the same time I would like to get some more power out of the 305 since it runs so well and doesn't have THAT many miles on it

As I said, use the same parts that are in my sig. They will all transfer over to the 350 when you are more flush.

Yes, just buy a 350 from the wrecker and rebuild that when the time comes. Much cost effective than rebuilding the 305.

Links?

I doubt I'd do much of labor myself...I don't really know anybody who works on cars so I can't really go and learn....it's such a bummer....I'd really like to get into the mechanical side of cars...but I just don't have a place to get hands on experience.

normally you can find a complete engine for 300-500 dollar in a junk yard.... But you stated that you dont have the facilities to do the work yourself... So, if you buy an engine and have a machine shop do the work, your prob looking atleast 1,500.00 in parts and labor for a basic rebuild.. Of coarse it depends on what your needs are for the engine...

Me personally would save up the money and buy a desent long block/complete block, thats just because I am lazy

But here are some places to check....

Would that engine drop right into my iroc? it says only for 73 and earlier but thats only for emissions correct? with fine tuning i could pass inspection i would hope....i want an engine that will "drop" in w/o any modifications...just switch the block out, hook everything up, tune it and be happy, no custom intakes, no moving pumps etc......

thanks for the links i really appreciate it.....
