92 camaro project

Hi,

I just bought a 92 camaro RS with a 305 TBI and an auto trans. I just want to get some ideas on what motor setup to run. I am thinking about going with a 350 or a 383 and I dont know if I should stay with the TBI or add a carb or change it to TPI. I am looking into running some kind of supercharger I think as well without going crazy with it. If anyone can give me some ideas on what to do. Also the really big thing is it has to be emissions LEGAL and pass the smog test everytime. I do want to make a fast street/strip car but it has to be able to drive around town as well. This car is my second car at this time but, might become my daily driver after I am all done.

Sweet! Welcome to the board bro. I'm with you on your whole approach. I need to stay emissions legal and needed more power. After months of research I've come to my final answer.

I bought an L98, so obviously I'm switching over to TPI. I'm stroking it (383), adding a Superram (get rid of the 4500rpm wall), getting AFR190's, and a LPE219 cam. This should easily put me in the low 12's, not too bad of MPG (with my T56) and good driveability. Oh and 100% Emissions Legal

If you're going to supercharge this engine, obviously you'll need forged internals. You should decide what you're going to do before you build. If you decide to blow it, you'll want lower compression pistons (~8.5:1), otherwise bump her on up to around 10:1--No detonation and allows pump gas.

Good luck and welcome to the board again!

If you need to keep it emissions legal, then putting a carb on it is out of the picture. Your best choices is converting it to TPI, or putting in an LT1 engine. TBI is not going to support the kind of horsepower you want with a blower.

Thats what I was thinking. I dont know where to look for a complete TPI setup though. The junkyards around my area cannot get everything or even close. So yea I am also wondering how hard will it be to convert to TPI. If anyone can give a web page or something that can help with that. As far as the blower I guess my only one would be the Vortech right?

Thanks for the time again.

Blowers--ATI makes the best ones around. There are other companies too.

Swapping--I'm going to do a write-up (similar to T56 conversion) on my TBI>TPI swap. As far as I know, if you get all the sensors, computer, wiring harness, and TPI components, it's really a bolt in. The harness will be a pain, and it's recommended you get a shop manual (www.helmsinc.com or something) for the wiring diagrams. You'll also need to replace the fuel pump. The fuel pumps are in-tank and therefore a pain to get swap.

I bought my TPI donor car on Ebay and got a storming deal. Look there for whole setups or even parts cars with the stuff you need. Try the classifieds on this site, or www.thirdgen.org At TGO there is a new setup for sale every week at least. I'll have some TPI parts for sale (stock injectors, plenum, runners, maybe some more) when I get the Superram in a few months.

I've got a complete TPI setup for sale. Wiring harrnes, adjustable regulator, Ported and poliished upper and lower intake, and the top plenium is nice and shinny.
