Re: 91 Z28 Rear End Gears

Just an FYI, the 10 bolt rears from ALL 4th Gen F-Bodies are notorious for breaking under little to no abuse/mods. Mine went out big-time at 30k miles with less then 6 runs down the 1/4 on street tires with no burnout and launching from idle. It was rebuilt under warranty and is already making noise again......with no drag passes this time. If you have a 383 (torque monster) I would be careful about a stock 4th Gen rear end of any kind. If you do a search on any of the 4th Gen forums, you will find a bazillion posts about trashed stock rear ends.

Just trying to help.

ur 10 bolt went out at 30k with stock gears, no launching, and only 6 times down the track????? u were doin sumtin wrong cuz i know a lotta people pushin 375rwhp which is the limit with the 10 bolt, that have 4.10's and strip the car all summer long....with abuse and launching..however there time will come when it goes kaaboomm!!!! i know 10 bolts are weak but thats a lil excessive from what u said

I was doing something wrong???? Such as?
I know guys (many) who have had the 10 bolts go out as bad as mine did who have never raced their cars. Ask anyone knowledgable (or who has owned and modified one) about 4th Gens and the rear end is the weakest link in the drivetrain.

It isn't excessive, it is a POS 10 bolt.

Lotta guys get theirs to last longer since they have auto trans....but us 6 speed guys get hosed way earlier.

OK,

What about getting a thicker gearset to work with the 2 series carrier? I read some posts on the 4th Gen section about these gears (Strange Gears):

http://www.thunderracing.com/catalog...&vid=6&pcid=67

That said the worked just fine. Any comments? I know earlier in the thread there were some guys saying that you couldn't do a 3:42 or 3:73 on a 2 series carrier.
