Question 91 Z-28 Opinions

I'm looking at a white 91 Z-28 305, 5-spd with 41,000 original miles on it. It has no options except for a CD player. Possibly a 1LE? I have a few questions. The steering wheel looks kind of worn for a car with that few miles. The leather on the rim of the wheel looks faded and cracked while the center where the air bag is looks like new. I'm wondering if this could be the result of an air bag deployment. I also noticed that the little rubber hood stops/adjusters look like they were painted over. When I asked the dealer about it he said they sometimes came like that. Did they? The fog lights are missing also. Does it sound like this car has taken one in the nose to you guys? The car appears to be straight with good paint and all. Underneath there appears to be a bit of rust. I would guess from the fact it didn't move very often. Just wondering your thoughts on this car and how much you think it would be worth.

The above is gone now Now have:

Enjoy this board so I'm still stickin' around.

I have a white 91Z and the hood stops are painted over from the factory. Almost everyone I have seen comes like that. The wear on the steering wheel is most likely worn down by someone who has rough hands. My cars is worn a little and the airbag cover looks mint. No big deal. As for the rust take a closer look and make sure its only surface rust. Try cleaning a spot or two with some sandpaper.

What about the aero-wing? Not there? Should have the fog lights. May not be a real Z. Anyone can glue in Z-28 badges on the rocker to make look like a Z. Better check the VIN.

No fog lights huh? Look under the headlight switch. Does it have a fog light switch?

If I remember right, the fog lights were deleted on the 1LEs. Check the RPOs.

I've been doing some research and it is looking more and more like it is a 1LE. The only option it has is a CD player. It has the full body kit and wing. Duel cats, 4 wheel disc brakes, 145mph speedo. I'm gonna check inside the glove box for the RPO numbers tomorrow. If it is a 1LE, how much would it be worth? I'm not sure the dealer know what it is or not.

1LE or not, it's worth more than $4000... 1LE signs would be, larger front brakes, aluminum driveshaft, dual cats, rear disc's, etc... Do some research on this car before jumping in on it. If it's a 1LE, it'll have RPO Z28,G92, and 1LE. I'm sure you'll find those codes, but just double check.

Yeah, the leather at the top of the steering wheel is in the sun all day and sweety palms pull out the die. the center is not leather, its senthetic. The stock fog lamps are $75 each, dealer cost. I replaced mine with cheap knock-offs for much less. If it came with Fog lights, the "grill" behind it would not be there. the passages go right up into the dual air filters. As for rust, check out the rear bumper, the metal behind the plastic one, these rust out like crazy.

I own a 91Z28 1LE. You can get a 1LE with power widows/mirrors etc. You can also get a 1LE with fog lamps so Ive been told by 2 different dealers. It is all in the order that the options are ordered. You had to put in the 1LE option code first then add the code for fogs at the end. No matter what 1LEs could never come factory equipped with AC. The guys above are right about the options which also include two piston aluminum PBR calipers/baffled oil pan and fuel tank etc. The only real way to find out is take the vin to the dealer and get them to run it and print you a sheet of the options. A lot of people use 1LE stuff to upgrade. Best of luck and I hope its a real one. If not its still a sweet ride.

Thumbs up

It is an 1LE. Took it for a test drive today. Checked the RPO numbers and there was the 1LE. Going back up tomorrow to make an offer. What would seem like a fair price?

Depends on mileage. I would say anywhere between 6-8... but to a collector, more like 10+
