9 bolt, how much power can it take?

The GM/AUS 9 bolt is stronger than the 71/2 and the other larger 10 bolts but can it take the abuse that a 12 bolt, 9 inch or a dana60 ?

I am looking for a "roller" for a project car and I want to know if I should pass up the 9 bolt.

I've heard that the 9 bolts are stronger than the 10 bolts that GM used in most of the 3rd gens, but I seriously doubt they will take the same abuse that a good 12 bolt or 9 inch will handle.

A true GN rearend? Doubtful. Those are pretty stout. What are you planning to do with the project car?

No. The 8.5" 10 bolts used in the GN and 2nd gen Camaro is quite a bit stronger than the 9-bolt which has a 7.75" ring gear. If properly prepped, an 8.5" 10 bolt is good into the 8's. Dave Hennigar ran well into the 8's for many years with an EFI/nitrous 406" in his '71 Camaro with a beefed stock 10 bolt.

My '77 has most of the tricks and mods to the stock 8.5" 10 bolt (spool, axles, girdle cover, welded tubes, c-clip eliminators, etc), and it has never given me even a hint of trouble.

Go ahead and invest in a 9 inch or 12 bolt.

Ive read that the 9 bolts, are comparibaly strong to the Dana rears, but wont take as much as the 9 inch or 12 bolt.

9 bolts will make a few 1.4 launches before blowing up. It'll probably do a season or two of 1.5s. Mine is in the 1.6 range and doesn't make a sound. Those numbers are from others with TTA's.

I'm sure with a trans brake it might not like it. I'm just foot braking it.

I ran high 11's at 117 mph on mine with 3.27 gears. I switched to a beefed up 10 bolt for a better gear ratio selection after a couple of years then finally installed a 9" when I finally went to a transbrake.
