86 Z
I just bought an 86 z28 with a 305 tpi in it. I was wondering what would be the best heads would be for it, keeping in mind im on a tight budget. Which heads would give me the best bang for my buck. I was also wondering what kind of rear-end it has in it, ive heard it may have 373s in it and that it also may have a posi in it. Is there anyway to be sure? Any help you guys could give me would be appreciated.
I'm sure it has a posi. It looks like your only gear options with TPI for that year were 2.73 or 3.23. The L69 had optional 3.73s
Take a look in your center console for the gear code. GU2= 2.73 GU5= 3.23 also look for the G92 code. Here's some good reading for you. www.thirdgen.org/newdesign/tech/techdb.shtml

Hey bro. Well, heres a sure fire way to check whether or not you have posi. Just burn out. If you see 2 tire marks, there you go, POSI, if not, well, then you're like me! I would venture to guess that a 305 TPI would proly come with 3.23's. My 86 Z has 2.73 non-posi.
As for heads, try Worlds S/R Torquer 305's. They are made specifically for small displacement chevys and retain the stock 58cc chamber size. So you won;t loose any of that compression! They are cheap, only about 350.00 assembled I think. maybe even a little less. They are some of the most cost effective bolt ons for our motors. Look into them seriously. Will be alot easier on your wallet than porting and polishing the stock heads. And less work too! Well, I hope that helps man! Take it easy!

Do you think the vortec heads would be a good choice or do you think i would be wasting my money? Also, the car was missing the radiator so the guy who sold us the car gave us a new one. I was told it was only a two core and it might have trouble keeping the car from overheating, is this true?

Unfortunately, the Motown heads won't work for two reasons.
1. 2.02 and larger valved heads won't work because the bore is too narrow.
2. 220 heads are waaaay to big for a 305. They are meant for big cube SBCs.
The SRs are the cheapest head to upgrade with. The only fly in the ointment is they will be a bottle-neck if you ever swap out the shortblock for anything bigger.
