'84 LG4 carb prob.
'84 LG4 carb prob.
I was fiddling w/ the car, trying to locate the source of a gas leak and also coolant leak... seems the gas leak is from the carb and the coolant is coming from the therm. housing
here is my major issue...
while the engine was running, i had the hood up looking for current seepage and i was toying w/ the carb. (to get the car to slow the idle I gave it gas once) and the smaller flap in the front of the carb basically became loose as crap... then upon giving it some gas, it would bogg REAL bad (2-3 sec.) before responding. mind you I had the air filter off which means 1 vacuum line was disconnected and I know there is another vacuum/carb. related hose that is broken right now (has been for months.. car runs fine).
so, i shut the car off, restart it hoping the mechanics would take care of themself and it did nothing. so.. of my 4 barrel carb. the front/primary plate is basically doing nothing right now. You might want to know its the single green wire/vertical mechanism that is not putting pressure up onto the primary plate to shut it (looking at the carb. head on from front of car, its off the left side of the carb)
I've been wanting to do one of 2 things, fix the car up, or sell it. At this point, im thinking selling it sounds better.
PS: my tags/license are from a different state and are expired so i cant really test drive it to see if it has negative effects on the driveability.
what do you guys think?
thanks in advance for any info.

Re: '84 LG4 carb prob.
You need to order a book on Rochester Carbs if your serious about keeping it. They are simple devices, but you need to have some knowledge of them to keep from getting easily frustrated.
When it's not FULLY warmed up, the choke(front flap) will only be partially open. It will open more as it warms up. (Carbs don't work their best when cold..)Also when cold and the flap is partially closed, the fast idle will be activated by a cam on the pass.side. It should idle around 1000rpm cold. If it's forced to release before sufficiently warming up, it will hessitate and stumble.(It's just the nature of the beast....)
9 out of 10 times the trouble with a carb is just simply setting the choke operation properly. Here's where a book with pictures is worth a thousand words..
The electric parts of a FEEDBACK 4bbl carb can easily be ohmed out to check for proper operation of solenoids.

Re: '84 LG4 carb prob.
thanks for the info... im a very impatient person by nature so I really dont think in the 3 years of ownership there's been 1 time that I actually 'let' the car warm up on its own... my idle is set too high (again, my lack of knowledge) and it sounds horrible idling at (guessing/no tach) 12xx-14xxRPM so I let it run 30-45 sec. maybe then stomp the pedal once real quick to get back to regular idle.
this time it was more of me being curious as to why the carb was leakin gas and I pulled up on the little system connecting to the front plate and it lost all its resistance... maybe thats normal... maybe nothing is wrong??
again, thanks!

Re: '84 LG4 carb prob.
i have the same idea of a problem with my 86 camaro 305 v8. im trying to figure out why the tempature sending unit isn;t telling the switch to turn the cooling fan on. and now since toying with it as well when i start up hte engine it revs at like 4000 rpms.. really loud and i gotta fix it now... if i figure anything out ill let u know..
Thanks

Re: '84 LG4 carb prob.
mine isnt that bad, i think the cold-idle is up so high just cause the idle itself is set too high... my car also has a clutch fan, so its nothing like the problem you're having. I think its time to start replacing things on my car unless I decide to sell it...
non-computer HEI
older style non computer carb
aftermarket intake
new valve covers (and gaskets)

Re: '84 LG4 carb prob.
ya for sure, ive accually been playing around with this relay for a while now.. there seems to be something really wrong with it.. there are a few minor things.. i think ill just take it into somewhere and have them fix it for the cost or wahtever.. and u can get another carb right? so u can exchange ures or just buy new... its a option
