700r4

How much power can a 700R4 transmission handle? I'm about to put a new engine in my 89 IROC and I'm trying to figure out if I should put in a TH350 while I'm at it. Basically its a stock GM crate motor bottom end with Vortech heads, intake, stock TPI, and a GM cam- .434-.460 lift. Will the 700R4 be alright? Thanks for any help.

The 700R4 will last as long as your new engine. You do not have a Horsepower Monster.

A 700r4 also has a higher 1st gear than the TH350. The 700r4 will be quicker off the line.

Talking

I have the GM 350 HO crate (vortech) and it basically scrambled my 180,000 mile 700r4. Got it rebuilt and it takes the shifts great!!!! The only problem I have is the need for sub frame connectors (first to second rolls the body) to stiffen the "non horsepower" motor

Later

It is not the horsepower that kills your tranny...IT IS THE TORQUE!!!!!!

Yes, a 700R4 with 180,000 abused miles on it will Not hold up with a new engine. And again more abuse with a New Engine and old 700R4 do not make a happy combo.

I am using a 700R4 with half the miles and new 350 with no problems.

Thanks guys. I figured it would probably hold up but I wasn't sure. The motor I'm building is basically the GM 350 H.O. motor, I bought the exact cam from that motor and the heads are the same, the only difference is I'm putting roller-tip rockers on mine (big difference). My trannie already has a shift kit too. Thanks again.

DEFINATLY get a trans cooler installed asap.

They make a huge difference. If you can keep the trans temp under control, the transmission will last much longer behind considerable power.

Just live with it till it breaks then get it professionally rebuilt and that should be good for 500 ft/lbs of torque

I'll put it this way. I've seen several big blocks w/nicely built 700R4s behind them with no probs, and those engines were making much more torque than a GM 350 HO.

By nicely built what do you mean, differnt hard parts (planetary gearsets, pump, etc.) or just heavier clutches?
