What makes the two piece flywheel diff from the 1 piece....can you take the stock 1 piece and machine it to work with 2 piece?

The bolt circle where it bolts to the crank is larger for a 2-piece, and it doesn't have the counterweight that a 1-piece main seal flywheel requires. It's possible to machine a 1-piece flywheel to fit a 2-piece crank, but you lose a lot of strength because some of the bolt holes overlap. I wouldn't recommend it.

The T-56 also requires a thicker flywheel to accomodate the pull-style clutch, so you can't just use a generic early-model flywheel either. You basically have no choice but to suck up the $350 hit on the 700107 to get a T-56 to bolt to an early-model block.
