7 5/8 disc rear in 86 Iroc

Is this a 9 bolt? 10? Will it hold any power?

Thanks

HeHe I've heard everyone refer to 9 or 10 bolt rears and was wondering what the 7 5/8 is considered. I'm a mustang guy and I have no clue about F bodys. I bought an 86 Iroc and thought I would learn about the 3rd gens. Would the 7 5/8 rear handle any power with drag radials???

If these are stupid ?'s forgive me.

If you are refering to the ring gear diameter of 7 5/8 's you have a 10-bolt rear (quick method just count the bolts on the axle housing cover). It all depends on now much power and abuse you intend with this rear. A BW 9-bolt is considered much stronger then the 10-bolt. Again a stock rear will not last forever with slicks.

A 7 5/8" rear is a 10 bolt with 28 spline axles, and is stronger than a 7 1/2" which would only have 26 spine axles.

Well, while were talking rears. Is a 9 bolt a 7 1/2 or 7 5/8? Is a 9 bolt rear a 28 spline?

28 spline axle shafts were not standard until the Mid-1989
model year. Prior to that date they were 26 splines. The BW 9-bolt has a 7.750 dia ring gear vs the 10-bolt 7.5 & 7.625 dia. The
9-bolt may have had 28 spline axle shafts before 1989, but I will not bet on it.

yes, yours would be a 26 spline 7.5 unless it has been swapped. The 9 bolt was also used from 85 on but I dont think it really started getting put into camaros until 87 but the birds got it as soon as 85.

The car is pretty much untouched as far as mods. A chevy friend of mine had some kind of paper with RPO codes on it and looked at some codes under the console lid and said it had a 7 5/8 3.23 limited slip in it. He may have been mistaken.

Bout the only thing I know for sure is that it has 4 wheel disc brakes.

The rpo code doesnt tell whether it is a 7 5/8 or 7 1/2. They are both the same housing, just with slightly different diameter gears in them. The 86 should have the 7.5 ring gear.

so if i count the bolts on the rear end cover, will it have ten bolts? hence the name, or is the count elsewhere on the rear end?

Yes the cover will have 10 bolts and the 9 bolt cover will have 9. This is not however where the number usually comes from. It is supposed to refer to the number of bolts that hold the ring gear. The 10 bolt has 10 bolts that hold the ring gear to the carrier. The 9 bolt goes against this idea and has 8 bolts that hold the ring gear to the carrier so it is technically an 8 bolt, but people just call it 9 in reference to the number of bolts on the cover.

Thanks Ben.

Would it be worth the time/money to try and find an 89-up 9 bolt for my 86?
