4th gen 5 spd = 88 GTA?

Exclamation 4th gen 5 spd = 88 GTA?

What will and will not work on the GTA?

I can get a 5 speed from a 95 V6 Camaro for 150 bucks.

Ive read that mid-90s and up T5s are stronger (World Class..?)

I did a search here, thirdgen.org, and search engines and found nothing that answers if it is a direct bolt on or what.

Anyone know or have sources with some info?

...I also heard that it wont last with the amount of torque in a 350 tpi, but I wont be racing it, and the GTA will likely remain stock. Basically so I will be able to drive a stick well when my 67 Camaro is done (6 speed) along with a few other things.

also... I have heard from a few people that it will bolt directly in (bellhousing and all)

I want to be very good and sure that it will bolt in with no problems... and whether or not the linkadge/pedals/etc will work also

it depends, in 95 there were 2 v6 engines. The 3.4 and the 3.8, the 3.4 is a 60 degree block whereas the 3.8 is a 90 degree block, which is the same as the 350 u have in your car. I have no idea if it will work, but if its a 3.4 it definately wont work, with a 3.8 you have a shot, but don't take my word for sure. If anything, TTT for ya.

It doesn't matter if it a world class or not, they will bolt up. BUT, since it is from a V6 it has a 14-spline input shaft, which is weaker than V8. Which have a 26-spline inout shaft. Plus V6s have a smaller diameter clutch, and V8 have an 11.5 diameter clutch.

Wait a minute! A trans that originally bolted to a 3.4 60* V6 Chevy has the same bolt pattern as a completely different 3.8L (Buick) V6 and BOTH just so happen to have the same bolt pattern as an 'ol small block Chevy????

You better be DAMNED sure of all this before you slap down the bucks! (No, I've never tried it which I why I'm not going to say for sure it won't work.)

Well, to tell you the truth I guessed at the year. I know it was mid to upper-mid 90s and I am 95% sure that the yard computer said 3.8l

I dont know what is going to happen tho, dont want to ruin the GTA.. but it would make things a lot easier in so many ways

Damon, the T5 from any 3.4 or 3.8, 305, whatever, will bolt up to the bellhousing. They all use the same case. The difference is the input shaft, and the bellhousing bolting up to the motor.

As far as I know, the T5s out of the 3.8 cars has the same 26 spline input shaft, and uses the same clutch & pressure plate, bell housing, t/o bearing, fork, etc. as the V8 cars that had T5s used. I believe it's all identical.

It's the 3.4 motors that had the 14 spline input shaft and different mounting hardware. Remember that the 3.8 has the exact same bolt pattern as a V8, and from the back, looks identical. The 3.4 uses different hardware because that's a 60* block, which is smaller and narrower. It requires a smaller bellhousing and clutch/pressure plate setup, and uses the 14 spline input shaft.

I'm not 100% certain that the 3.8 uses the same WC T5, but I'm sure enough that I'd bet money on it.

T5s from '88 and up were world class and were stronger then regular pre '88 ones. The 2.8 and 3.4 V6 T5s used a smaller input shaft and 14 spline disks. You CAN use ANY T5 with your V8, but if you are using a 14 spline one, use a V8 pressure plate and a V6 disk and it works fine. HOWEVER, they are NOT strong at all. I broke 2 world class and 3 V6 T5s (this is old, non WC 14 spline T5s). The cheap 14 spliners lasted 2 weeks each max and they were behind a mild 350 (look at sig for my '88 figures), the world class ones lasted a fair bit longer, but still blew. I got a th350 now. If your motor is mostly stock and you get that V6 trans from a 4th gen, you should be ok for a while. But if you have any kind of power-adders on your motor, forget the T5. I love them driveablity wise, but longevity I hate them. I hate my th350 to tell you the truth, I am gonna look for a Super T10 or something for my ride.

And also if you need a bellhousing, or more info, just e-mail me at igor455@shaw.ca and I'll help you out. I must have had pulled 10-15 T5s total between mine and friends cars and have had to make all kinds of crap work with my '88 so just let me know.
