383 Stroker Damper/Flywheel ??

My friend has a 383 stroker and needs a crank damper and flywheel. He has a flywheel and damper from a 350, but I am pretty sure that you need a different one for the 383, but I may be wrong. Also, how can you tell for sure that it is a 383? Any help would be great.
thanks

If it is a 383, it will have a 4" stroke crank. You can check the casting numbers or measure how far down the bore the piston is at BDC (Bottom Dead Center). If it is 3.48 inches it is a 350 or a 305 (depending on bore) if it is 4" is is a 383 or 400 (383 is a 4" bore, 400 is a 4.125 bore).

If it is a 383, it should (unless it was internally balanced to use 350 flywheels and balancers) use a flywheel and balancer for a 400 small block. Just order parts for a 400 and you should be fine. However, if he is building this motor now, he should get it balanced and then it will work with the parts he supplies (and be easier on bearings and such).

Hope that helps.

A 383 has a stroke of 3.75 not 4.00. I've built one and have the parts to build my next so i am right. Also a 383 will have a bore of 4.030. Your friend should have a flywheel/flexplate from a 400 if it is an externally balanced assembly, same with the balancer. If he bought parts for it to be internally balanced (like i did) then he can use any regular 350 balancer and flywheel/flexplate he likes.

I just reread my post and realized that I goofed, but you beat me to it. You are correct, it is a 3.75 stroke. 4" stroke is getting up around 434 cubic inches (depending on bore).
