I bought a 1983 Z28, the 305 has been removed and had a 350 put in it, so being a different engine, I'm not even sure it belongs on this board. I'm contemplating puting a stroker kit in it. Cost has no bearing, nor does ease of installation, only time. Anyone know how much time I'd be investing putting in a stroker kit? I don't have the tools to do it at home, I'd have to take it to a friend's shop, he's good to me but he's still going to charge me for ripping apart an engine in the corner of his shop where he could be doing the same thing with someone else's engine and making money on it.

 

If money no problem just buy a 383 Long block and your done, well almost done, just your intake ... ect.

lol, Well, 2 grand might be a small problem. I've found stroker kits from $500 to $1,000. $1,000 wouldn't be a problem. 2 grand however ... ehhh

I would only recommend stroking if you are going to be breaking into the bottom end anyway for improved strength or to fix something. For cost compared to added power its just not worth it. I noticed you don't have an aftermarket intake listed in your sig. I would recommend getting that next instead or maybe some long tube headers if you haven't already.

 

Ok, sweet, I'll take that into consideration. Have any idea what headers will fit? I know the guy that I bought it from said he tried to put shorty headers on it with no luck, I've had a few other friends that couldn't get shorty headers to fit either. Any ideas? Oh and what manafold would you go with?

 

What are the specs on the cam that you have in the 350? What heads do you have?

Well there are alot of things to consider....what kind of power are you looking to get....is this a daily driven car etc....
Sure you can get an Eagle stroker kit for $1000, but you get what you pay for. If price is not a concern, go all forged, but it'll cost. Plus you'll want to do something with the heads and entire valvetrain as well......anyway you look at it, it's gonna be alot of $$$....even going with cheaper parts between machining everything, assembly etc. it adds up. Just as reference my 383 was over 10K. It adds up quick!

As far as going all forged really depends on what kind of power his engine will be making. My first 383 that I put together had cast pistons, scat steel crank , "regular" 5.7 rods and did take the abuse at the dragstrip( video in sig) where I recommend really making an upgrade >>>the heads. For the money and time why not just order a ZZ4 Crate engine from GM and install it. You will probably get the same performance if not better. Those ZZ series engines are great, I'm gonna put one in my 91 RS.

 

yeah if your looking to stay undr 2k forget doing your own stroker,too many variables.look for a already built short block and then maybe you can go.
think ok 1000 for a kit..thats not balanced,balancing expensive,also is that internal balanced or external balanced crank?if its a stroker i hope its internally balanced but then are your current balancer and flywheel internal balanced or "nutreal" balanced,if not youl need new ones of those.
then theres the commn stuff youll need regardless,engine gasket kit,good fel pro well over 100 bucks for a complete kit because thats what youll need.
then theres the internals,ok im assuming kit is rods,crank and pistons...fine..you going to reuse your cam lifter,timing chains??hmmmmmmmmm...i dont know
also dont quote me on a 383 build becaus ethats a 3.75 stroke,but your block may or may not require clearancing..again not cheap....
it all ads up real fast and these are just some of the most common things youll run across regardless.....not to mention if your intake and exhaust are up to snuf for the bigger engine?
im the biggest beleiver in theres no replacement for displacement,kinda why i went with the 425 stroker.but if the budget cant do it your better of building wha tyou got and save cash.
look at it this way,350 vs 383 =33 cubes
granted witha longer stroke your get a bit more torque out if it and probably a mor eflatter torque curve bt for the hp diff,look at it this way..33 more cubes,at 1 hp per cubic inch(not a bad mark)your looking at an engine making 33 more hp,even if you stretch it to a high standard of 1.2 hp per cube,your only looking at 39.6 more hp.....i think you can find a way to gain 40 more horse out of your 350 for 2000 dolllars.........heck bolt on a 100 hp nos kit for about 500 and boom,,your exceeeded what any 383 will get you

 

had my 383 built tough as hell. $4k. i cant wait till the track opens up.
