350 Questions
My friend bought a brand new gm 350 replacement long block for his car. I have no idea what the motor is specked for (its replacing a 305) but we are having some issues with the balancer and the fuel pump. The boss for the fuel pump is there but the hole for the pushrod is not. Can it be drilled if not no big deal but the confusing part is the balancer. The end of the crank shaft where the bolt would go is filled with some sort of metal. My question is what holds the balancer on. Its off the engine right now due his putting a cam in the motor. If its pressed on how do we put it back on. Thanks in advance for any help.

It is pressed on in a sense, but the balancer NEEDS that bolt to hold it back against the bottom timing gear. Otherwise the timing gear may shift and cause the timing chain to snap. I don't know why the bolt hole is filled, but it certainly doesn't need to be left that way.
If it's a Goodwrench engine, it is probably assembled from a core. The crank hole should not be filled. The original owner probably did this and the rebuild facility didn't notice it. Even if it's an engine from an auto parts store it's probably pieces from core engines. Take it back from where you got it or ask them to see another engine and compare.
