All 3 can make good hp, it's just easier with a 383. I use 400's now.

With a shorter stroke, they rev easier than bigger engines, but don't make as much torque. I've run 327's, 350's and 400's, and can tell you, without a doubt, torque is good!

The mild 400 I just installed in my 71 pulls from off idle to 6,000 like no 327 ever could. And that's with a small hyd flat cam and smog heads. With a big cam, AFR heads, etc, it would probably pick up another 75-100 hp. The last 400 (very similar specs) ran a best of 13.7 at our local 4,100 ft track. About a 13 flat corrected to sea level. The car weighs 3550 with me in it, TH350, stock converter, 3.42 gears, Radial T/A's. Idles like a stocker, plenty of torque driving around town. No mild 327 could do that. It would have to be built, require a high stall converter, and deep gears.

There is a mystique surrounding the 327, but trust me, build the biggest engine you can afford.

Build the biggest engine you can, and put the best heads on it you can afford. It's a myth that 327's will out rev. a 350, but maybe a 383, but a 383 will still out power it.

No need to pay someone to do it. Just use the head gasket as a template to centerpunch the locations and drill out with a 1/8 bit and a hand drill. Just angle towards the water jackets, about 30 degrees, after you get drill bit started. Iron is soft and super easy to drill. About a 1/2 hour job.

Do a search on the subject here; it has been covered many times.

No prpblem at 30 over. My last 400 never got over 180 even when I was idling in a long line at the entrance to the drags waiting to get in for some thrashing. At the risk of sounding redundant, build the biggest engine you can afford. Only problem with 400's is finding a good block that will run at 30 over. If you can't find one, next best is a 383.
