305TPI Rebuild

Ok, my car has about 180k miles on it now. I've noticed I'm burning a good amount of oil. At first I thought about just pulling the motor and dropping in a 350 and using my TPI setup. After a run to the junk yard and finding lots of wrecked F-bodys I was pretty excited. Come to find out they are all V6's. Doesn't anyone wreck v8's? I looked around on the forums here and thirdgen.org about buying one. If its about an average price by the time you factor in shipping its too much to be paying for a 350 and most are complete. If they are they seem to want a ridiculous amount for them or they have lots of work done.

So I went to the idea of just rebuilding my 305. Most would say thats a horrible idea but I am actually very happy with my 305. I have the 305 mated to a T5 tranny with the stock 323 gears and dual cat exhaust with an aftermarket Dynomax muffler. I raced my friends 2002 Mustang GT auto which is stock except flowmaster 40 series mufflers. I had him by almost 2 cars until the top of 3rd where he pulled 1/2 a car on me.

I looked at rebuild kits for my 305 and I can get just a basic stock rebuild for 200 bucks from summit racing. For just a little more I can get a rebuild with a .030in bore that comes with pistons. Would that really be enough to make a difference though? Would I be better off spending that money on something else. I'm not looking for a ton of speed. I was just going to go with the gasket and piston ring kit for the 200. Do a mild cam and a shot of nitrous. I think if I'm a little happy with my old tired 305 a fresh 305 with a few boltons plus cam and a shot of nitrous would do me just fine.

So I've come to the plan of doing a stock rebuild with a mild cam. For bolt ons I want to do headers of course, a speed chip, and a 125shot of nitrous. Unless anyone else has some suggestions. Thats what I'm looking for is some suggestions from someone else.

Can someone suggest a good cam? Its my daily driver and I'm not looking to pour a ton of money into it. I just want the cam to start with because I know the worst part of the cam is the install. So if the motor is tore apart what better time to do it.

Thanks for reading my long rambeling post. Appreciate any suggestions anyone decides to give me.

Re: 305TPI Rebuild

if you are going to do your 305 at least do it right,

have your bottom end balanced, lightened and blueprinted, by somebody who knows what they are doing, not just the first shop you find in the phone book,

my cousin builds drag and stock car motors, he did up a 305 for another 1 of my cousins in his 90 Iroc, 305, 5 speed, 3.45 rear, headers and flowmaster thats it

ran a 13 sec 1/4 mile without touching heads or intake and running the stock cam, just a soild bottom end

car was stolen before I had a chance to put a chip in it, would have been a quick little 305

edit: you should have 3.45's in a 305, 350's got 3.23
13's is as fast as a SS LS1 camaro

Trust me if having my car down for over a month and cash flow wasn't a problem a 305 wouldn't even be an option.

Its on the internet, it must be true. I'm sorry, but its impossible for a LB9 to go 13.9 with no intake, head or cam work. Just having a solid bottom end does not make any more power.

problem with MAP and cam is fuel/timing is based on manifold vacuum
when you put a cam in it changes vacuum and ecm will think the motor is under a differnet load then it actually is

lighten and balancing give alot of power,
easier for the rotating assembly to turn, make motor more effceint leaving more power to the wheels

the guy that built that motor is doing up 1 for my brother and another for my cousin,

my bros is a 350, the other is a 305, both motors are almost identical builds,
very mild cam, stock heads and intake, forged, balanced lightened and blue printed bottom ends, with a 150 shot of nitrous, and I'm doing dyno tuned chips for both, 1 for street, 1 for track on the bottle,
12's have been predicted for the 305, low 12 high 11 predicted for the 350

2005 track results for our site all at Mission Raceway I belive
