305tpi---> 350 tpi

Hey guys, ive got a 305 tpi car( its an 86, and i wanna upgrade it to a 350) ive seen a bunch of places on the net offer "for tpi" cratemotors, but there only for 88-92..? is this because those cars would have center bolt heads?? my car has the 86 and earlier type, wouldnt it be more common to make 350s for that application??? shooot me a line guys, i dont wanna buy the wrong thing, im probably going to build my own motor anyway instead of buying a crate motor because im poor.

You can use the 88-92 350. Just need to change the flexplate/flywheel depending on your drive train, to that of a 1 piece, 153 tooth, internal balance.

I'd just stick with the earlier style motor, Its cheaper and easier to find "dress-up" parts and compatability componensts as well. I'm using an 86 350 in an 88 car with the tpi from an 86 motor.

isnt the tpi manifold base different for pre 86 tpi cars, and 86 and later cars...
i thought it was because the heads are different i could be wrong..

Re: 305tpi---> 350 tpi

you are correct pre 88 were perimiter heads and the intake bolts them self change angles in 88. Go with a pre 88 setup and all you'll really need is a chip to go with the motor...don't get to crazy on cam selection though as the TPI setup doesn't like healthy too much...at .050 stay in the 218-221 duration area. Otherwise the itake won't let the cam do it's job. If you want to go rowdier get a mini-ram and then go as big as you want. Just something to keep in mind when building a TPI injected engine.

'86 was the beginning of one-piece rear main seal. '87 was the beginning of roller lifter cam and center-bolt valve covers. '88 was the start of swirlports (TBI only).

'86 TPI chip will handle a 350. MAF doesn't mind displacement change as much as SD. Regardless, it's going to max out at 500 CFM. You might want an adjustable fuel pressure reg, though, and maybe 22 lb injectors.

An '86 305 TPI has more than what's needed to smoke the tires with 3.73 gears. No engine changes needed. But headers will help. Whatever you do to the engine, however, will be limited by the TPI, especially the runners.
