305 TPI guys.....

What kind of cam are you guys that are running 305's with stock heads, meaning nothing done to them, with TPI. I'm leaning towards the LT1 cam, have one already, got it free so no big deal if i get a new cam. But what kind of cam are you guys running? I'm looking for something that will probably make power from about 1500 to 5200 would be great. Any suggestions or ideas on what everyone is running and what kinda results you got.

Anything is going to be better than that peanut cam that you have in there. I have the 350 cam since I have the 5 spd but I would say go with the LT1 cam there have been a lot of happy people running that cam in a 305.

I know this isn't an answer to the question you asked, but I would say that it would be best if you tried to maximize your car by doing some minimal mods first. For example, port the plenum, advance the timing, K&N's, catback, do the free mods, etc.

See what kind of time you can get with that stuff, then maybe port the base and put headers on while you're doing the cam. You should be able to see some mid to low 14's with the first phase of stuff I listed. Then very low 14's or high 13's when you do the other stuff.

I slapped a Crane Cams PowerMax 2050 into my 305 TPI.
I put stock 87 heads on it, 52mm TB, SLP Dual CAI, MSD 6A, and I had a 5 speed.
Cam was .480/.454 284/272 advertised duration.
My Engine Bay
Here is a vid of the car, 305 with Cam

Im running the lt1 cam in a 305 tbi and I really like it, but if I had to do it again I'd run the ZZ4 cam, but only because I have the vortec heads and I think I could get away with it. The nice thing about the LT1 cam is that it wont freak out the computer since its 115 lsa and it should work great with stock heads, esp since you dont have the ****ty 305 tbi heads. You might want to change your springs though, depending on milage.

Thanks,
I just wish the 305 didn't die. I was hoping to spank some LT1's with it. 14.1 @99mph with a 2.3 60' time, with the car in limp home mode. Had a bad prom in the car for 6 weeks. WindowsXP and my eprom programmer software weren't compatible. It would look like it did a good burn when in fact it didn't. Got the new software but it was too late, motor started to knock and one of my piston rings disintigrated.

I do have a few things done to it already, K&n's, FRA, Borla, hypertech coil, 4th gen rear end with 3.42's (the time listed in sig was with 2.73's) but thats really about it. I'm trying to do this on a budget so buying headers and stuff is dependant on if i can find a nice set used somewhere. Rockers I can get for a decent price, springs are a must, so keep the repiles coming.

Keep the ideas coming guys.

I've got a Comp Cams "computer controlled".

.480/.480 lift, 210/220 duration at .050 lift, 112 lobe separation.

My car isn't a 305 TPI but that cam will still work with one.

That is too big for a 305. More fit for a 383.

The cam is listed for a "305-350 TPI with modified computer". You can check it out in Comp Cams newest catalog if you want.

I think that cam may be good for a 305. Definitely WAY too small for a 383.

actaully that cam is just right for his motor...the duration is right below 220 which is a good cam for a car with TPI...anything higher wont work. My cam is 222i 226e and its too high for my TPI...

Any cam with lift that exceeds .450 to .460 is too big for an Chevy engine with stock heads. It will require machine work--the heads will have to come off and go in the shop.

Thus I say it is not a good choice.
