305 TBI Power
305 TBI Power
How much power can i get out of a 305 TBI? I have talked to a lot of people that say its not that much. That just makes me want to prove them wrong
. So what do you guys think I can do to get all the power I can out of this motor? Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Re: 305 TBI Power
not much. hahaha
j/k if you wana keep it tbi.. maybe a performer intake, headers, hi-flow cat/ no cat, good muffler, throttle body spacer, better cam, better ignition system, and as for the car, higher stall converter if automatic, gears in the rear. and then there is always N2O.

Re: 305 TBI Power
Eh, I am sorry to say it, but they are right. From the factory, the 305 TBI made 170hp and 255tq at the crank. Thats less than 150hp at the wheels. I know these things are dogs, I picked one up as a donor, and compared to my 350TPI Iroc, that thing has zero *****. The newer 4 bangers that are coming out have more hp than this car.
Umm, the main problems with the engine are the wimpy cam...I am talking
.350/.384 lift and 179/194 duration. To give you an idea, the stock cam in my 350 is a .413/.428 lift and 202/207 duration. That along with the swirl port heads are not helping for power much. Those heads were meant more for torque, hence the half decent torque number. The intake is only a 2bbl as well, so you are losing out there. Bottomline, if you want to get some real power out of it, expect to spend up to, if not over $2000. I suggested to someone at TGO who is in your position to do a TPI swap from a donor at a junkyard or off of ebay or something. You will get about 50 more hp and torque (maybe more) if you do this swap, and if you can get all the parts (heads, intake, electronics) out of the same car, it will be a pretty straightforeward swap, and cheap at that (around 600$, maybe less if you shop around). You can then just get a mild cam from summit for a few hundred, something a little beefier than the stock 350 cam would be nice. You could even get a new set of heads if the money is right, and skip out on the stock TPI heads. Of course, this would pick up some nice power. So if you did that swap, after market heads and cam, you are looking at about 220-260hp.
However, if you are looking for extreme simplicity, and economy isn't a concern, you can always go carb, and pick up new parts in that department (carb, intake, new heads are still a must here, cam as well).
Consider it, and ask around, but at this point, with simple bolt ons like exhaust, pulleys, chip, ignition, etc, you will only barely touch 200 at the crank. Right now, that car will run low 16's and with that, you will run high 15's. Expect low 14's with that TPI setup, new cam and heads, and if you ended up getting an LSD rear, say hello to 13's
You need to attack this problem at it's source, which is primarily the cam and heads, and intake.
Hope this gives you some new insight, and feel free to ask us any more questions you may have.

Re: 305 TBI Power
Thanks guys for the input. Sound like I might be shoppin around for a 350. Lets say I get a 350 from a same year camaro, what will I need to make a complete swap into my car? And to make matters worse my camaro is an automatic

Thats a good place to start, but like someone else already said, most TBI guys will just go carb. Simplicity and many more available intake manifolds make it a good choice.

Re: 305 TBI Power
stuff like an aftermarket 4bbl TBI, new intake, vortec heads, MSD ignition, LTs, and most of all TUNING! TBI was made for torque more than HP so you have to do mods that are going to take advantage of that (aka vortec heads, msd, LTs, etc.).
