305 heads on a 350?
Re: 305 heads on a 350?
Just a quick note. I don't think those LT1 police heads will work on anything other than a real LT1. Gen 2 LT1 heads have a different coolant flow pattern than standard Gen 1 smallblock heads, just so you know.
Re: 305 heads on a 350?
unless you port the crap out of 305 heads or they already your gonna gain potential maximum compression but lose a ton of static compression due to the smaller valves/runners. a kid in my class put stock 305 heads on his 82 firebird and now it runs like complete crap.
I have a Gen 2 block sitting under the hatch of my other camaro
. I'll put it in once I get the title for it. heads aren't with me right now and need to be shipped here. I've almost got everything ready for it once I get that title. I still need to get a 4L-60E transmission and rebuild it with a stronger kit and get some autometer gauges.
Yea I didn't really want to put the 305s on it anyhow because of it's flow problem with not filling the cylinder enough to compensate for the compression bump. I will look into some vortec heads, thanks everyone

Re: 305 heads on a 350?
Yes I changed my mind to keep it sinple and cheap. I'm staying with the 350 (no stroker crank). See if my other camaro didn't need heads, I wouldn't get a set of 350 heads and just reuse the 305's because they are already fully ported. so basically that's what I'm looking at. I'm going to port them too along with the 350 heads that came with the engine.
I'm thinking maybe I will port the originals and use them for alittle bit and swap them out with a better pair so I can sell them for more money on ebay or something. I need practice anyhow so when I port those Gen2 heads I will know more of what I'm doing

Re: 305 heads on a 350?
Using the original 76cc heads is probably what I'm going to do so I can use the 305 heads on my other camaro because I need to move it from where it is and it's going to be a whole lot easier to put it on a trailer if I need to for towing purposes. Plus even though it's low compression don't you get alittle back from the better flow that increases dynamic compression?
That reminds me, the 350 heads that came witht he crate motor don't appear (don't have the valves out yet so I can't tell, but am pretty sure) to have the holes in the exhaust ports for the EGR system. Will this set off a code? Any way to get around it and keep FI?

nm, it's only one exhaust port that has it. Done porting one sode, will post pictues when i take them in a min.
pics didn't really turn out good. Flash at bad angle. Will get some when I get to a better light source if I remember...

Re: 305 heads on a 350?
I read in chevy hi perfomance that gm put outbow tie vortec heads they flow better than afr heads and come with some pretty trick parts for cheaper. i'll find out the part # if u want. I do know the valves are 2.0 and 1.55 lift. springs can go to .530 out the box. they tested them on a 355 with froged bottoms and they made 610 hp at around 7000rpm so they can go. I want to put some on my 82 z28. oh and the best part is that you can put regular 12 bolt pattern intake manifolds.
Re: 305 heads on a 350?
sounds awesome, a part number would be great. What month/year was that? Have any idea what cc the chambers are? Hopefully tomorrow or sunday I can finish porting and polishing the heads. Well I'm off to go get the gasket set for the 350 and the 305.
Re: 305 heads on a 350?
Oh well I'm just going to use the heads it came with. It looks like I only lose like 20-25 HP from the 1.5 point drop in compression and that would also mean I could use the 89 or even the 87 octane, right?
custom cam ordered for 350. should take 4 days to grind and 2 days for shipping. The guy who is doing the valve work said the heads I got are a good pair to have even with the low compression. Once I get the cam all broken in and everything, I will try to find a place to dyno my car and post results. The guy I talked to talked me out of ordering a custom cam at first even though I used a dynosim program to get the figures. Said it was inaccurate which is opposite of what I heard about them and when I ran the specs of the cam he was going to sell me, it was weaker in all aspects including volumetric efficiency, torque, and HP along the whole curve or at least what it showed from 2000RPMs+. So needless to say I called back changed my order and now I can't wait to see how this runs.
