3:42 gear swap question?

I have a 3:42 gear for a fourth gen f-body and my cousin has an '86 Iroc. He wants to know if the gear that i have will work in his car without getting an new carrier or posi. Thanks

Depends, I have a 3 series carrier and if he has a 2, it won't work. You need to know the series of BOTH, not just his carrier.

The gear I have is a 3 series carrier. I was wondering if anyone knew what series carrier my cousin would have or where I can look to find out. My cousin doesn't know anything about cars, and I don't know too much about the third gens.

The gear may be FOR a 3 series carrier but the gear is not the 3 series carrier. For example, if you have a 2 series carrier, I could stick a 3.73 on it. Look at the selection for Richmod Gears and you will see several gears that are the same ratio for different carriers. The carrier we are refering to is the posi unit.

I don't think we would know what series carrier he has. Your best bet may be to take out both units and see if the ring fits over the carrier.

I know the difference between the carrier and the gear series.

But thanks for the info guys. I think what we will do and probably just see if the gear will fit when we take the rear end off.
